Four Skyhawks record multiple points in victory
FOXBORO, Mass. (November 5, 2015) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team used six different goal scorers and a 29-save effort from freshman goaltender William Palmer (Cranston, Massachusetts/Boston Bandits - EHL) to defeat Assumption College tonight, 7-4, in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Senior forwards Anthony D'Elia (Stamford, Connecticut/Gunnery School), Willy Baker (Suffern, New York/The Hill School), Garrett White (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Boston Bulldogs - AJHL), and junior Brian Higgins (Milton Massachusetts/Proctor Academy) led Stonehill's offense tonight, as each player registered multi-point games.
Palmer, who was named the Northeast-10 Goaltender of the Week on Monday for the first time this season, was solid between the pipes despite allowing four goals. The freshman stopped nine shots in the first period, ten in the second, and ten in the third period to preserve the win for Stonehill. Junior Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Archbishop Williams High School) registered 21 stops in goal for Assumption, after relieving senior goaltender Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Connecticut/Glastonbury High School), including 14 in the third period as the Skyhawks registered a 14-10 edge in shots on goal for the frame. Stonehill finished with a 45-33 advantage in shots and the Skyhawks went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Greyhounds finished 1-4.

Assumption's offense tonight was an all-around effort as 11 different skaters recorded a point. Sophomore Tommy Mahoney (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree), classmate Jake Moore (Medford, Massachusetts/Medford High School), junior Paul Amarone (Hamden, Connecticut/Trinity-Pawling) and senior captain Brandon Bete (Greenfield, Massachusetts/Northfield Mount Hermon) all netted a goal for the Greyhounds.
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Jenkins' score 9:54 into the first period, but Assumption responded just three minutes later, when Tommy Mahoney scored his first goal of the season to knot the game up at one goal apiece.
Stonehill looked to seize control of the game going into the first intermission after goals by Higgins and White pushed the lead to 3-1, but reigning NE-10 player of the week Bete found the back of the net with under a minute to play in the opening stanza to keep Assumption within striking distance.
Amarone tied the game up at three, just three minutes into the second period collecting a pass from Matt Cowles (Farmington, Connecticut/Avon Old Farms) and slotting the puck past Palmer for his first marker of the season.
That's as close as Assumption would come as Stonehill turned up the attack and scored four consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. Sophomore defender Connor Tedesco (Winchester, Massachusets/Proctor Academy) gave the Skyhawks a lead they wouldn't relinquish in the second period, receiving the puck from D'Elia and Baker and burying his first goal of the season. Newton got into the scorer's book just a minute later at the 16:54 mark and D'Elia doubled up the Skyhawk lead, taking advantage of a hooking penalty to put the game out of reach at 6-3. Higgins netted his second goal of the night to put the finishing touches on Stonehill's seven goal outburst, picking out the upper right hand corner of the net.
Stonehill (1-0-1, 1-0-0 NE-10) returns to action this Saturday, as the Skyhawks travel to Plymouth, N.H. to take on out of conference foe Plymouth State University at 6 p.m. Stonehill will not play on its home ice again until December 1st, when the Skyhawks host the Wentworth Institute of Technology. Assumption (0-2-0, 0-2-0 NE-10) will be back on the ice Friday, November 13th as the Greyhounds host Franklin Pierce at 5:35 p.m.
