UMass Dartmouth Rallies Past Stonehill, 6-3

Junior Garrett White gave Stonehill a 3-1 lead 4:20 into the game, but UMass Dartmouth rallied for a 6-3 victory.

Corsairs outscore Skyhawks 4-0 over final two periods

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (January 29, 2015) – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth ice hockey team outscored Stonehill College 4-0 over the final two periods to earn a 6-3 victory this evening in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Hetland Arena.

Stonehill led 3-1 less than five minutes into the contest, but the Corsairs fought back to tie the score in the second period before scoring three times in the third. UMass Dartmouth outshot Stonehill 47-37, including 17-8 in the third period, and the Corsairs were also able to capitalize on two of their power play opportunities, while the Skyhawks went 0-for-7 with a man advantage.

Juniors Thomas Jenkins (Canton, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton), Kevin Airoldi (Kennebunk, Maine/Boston Jr. Rangers), and Garrett White (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Boston Bulldogs) all scored for Stonehill, while senior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) made 41 saves in net.

UMass Dartmouth was led by senior Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Michigan/Rochester Ice Hawks) and freshman Jaret Babych (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Chilliwack Chiefs), who recorded three points each. Junior Brandon Gilmore (Quincy, Massachusetts/Curry) also posted a multi-point effort with a goal and an assist, while junior John Sartell (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy) and sophomore Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Massachusetts/Norwich University) chipped in with a goal apiece.

Corsairs sophomore netminder JJ Solloway (Derry, New Hampshire/Northern Cyclones) made 34 saves in 37 opportunites, including 13 in each of the first two periods. Solloway was shaky in the opening five minutes of the game, allowing three Stonehill goals on the first six shots that he saw, before turning aside all 31 the rest of the way.

Walters opened the scoring just 12 seconds into the game with his team-leading tenth goal of the season, but Stonehill pulled even at the 2:26 mark when senior Stephen Balsamo (Atkinson, New Hampshire/Brewster Academy) and freshman Tommy Newton (Hollis, New Hampshire/Portland Jr. Pirates) connected with Jenkins.

Airoldi gave the Skyhawks the lead less than a minute later, and White beat Solloway at the 4:20 mark to make the score 3-1 in favor of the visitors. Following a Stonehill penalty midway through the period, Kelly scored the first of two UMass Dartmouth power play goals in the contest to pull the Corsairs to within one heading into the first intermission.

The second period was quiet compared to the five-goal first, with Gilmore's equalizer 8:10 into the frame serving as the only score of the period. Babych ended a scoring drought for both teams of over 20 minutes midway through the third with his go-ahead goal at the 9:32 mark, and Sartell netted an insurance tally 1:12 later before Walters added an empty-netter in the closing minutes of the contest.

Following tonight's game, Stonehill (9-5-3, 4-0-1 NE-10) will return home to host Framingham State University on Saturday afternoon at the Foxboro Sports Center. UMass Dartmouth (6-10-2, 5-4-2 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as well, as the Corsairs are set to host Fitchburg State University at Hetland Arena.
