Camels score three late goals to snap Skyhawks eight game unbeaten streak
NEW LONDON, Conn. (January 10, 2015) – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team scored three times over the final 10:29 of the third period to earn a 3-1 comeback victory over Stonehill College this evening in non-conference action at Dayton Arena.
Stonehill's loss snaps an unbeaten streak of eight games dating back to November 6th. The Skyhawks entered tonight's action with a 6-0-2 mark in their last eight contests, including three consecutive victories, since opening the season with a pair of losses.
Senior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) made a game-high 30 saves in net, including 13 over the first twenty minutes of action.
After a scoreless first period, junior forward Garrett White (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Boston Bulldogs) put the Skyhawks ahead at the 13:27 mark of the second with a top shelf shot from the left circle. Senior Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Massachusetts/Walpole Express) and junior Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, New York/Boston Bulldogs) were credited with assists.
Stonehill carried its one-goal lead into the third period, but the Camels struck for the equalizer with 10:29 left in regulation, as junior Tim DePretoro (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/Northfield Mount Hermon) and freshman Chris Jellison (Fitchburg, Massachusetts/Middlesex School) set up junior Joe Birmingham (Medford, New Jersey/Northfield Mount Hermon) for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
With the score still tied at one and 1:54 remaining in the third, junior Sebastian Meltzer (Montreal, Quebec/Lower Canada College) netted the go-ahead goal with the help of freshman Matt Gaetz (Mississauga, Ontario/Hill Academy). Senior Zach Jones (Gibsonia,Pennsylvania/Shady Side Academy) added an empty-netter 50 seconds later to seal the victory for the home team.
Junior netminder Tom Conlin (Norwood, Massachusetts/Norwood) improved to 4-4-2 with a strong effort between the pipes, as he made 11 of his 23 saves in the third period.
Neither team was able to capitalize on its power play opportunities, as Stonehill went 0-for-2 with a man advantage and Connecticut College was 0-for-3. The Camels held a 33-24 edge in shots.
Stonehill (6-3-2, 3-0-1 NE-10) will look to bounce back on Wednesday night, when the Skyhawks are set to return to the Foxboro Sports Center for a 7 p.m. matchup with Becker College. Connecticut College (4-5-2, 2-3-1 NESCAC), which is now unbeaten in its last five games, will be on the road Tuesday night at Saint Anselm College.
