Senior Kevin Aufiero nets game-winner with 2:40 left in regulation

BOSTON, Mass. (December 6, 2014) – Senior forward Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Massachusetts/Walpole Express) scored the game-winning goal with 2:40 remaining in the third period to lift Stonehill College to a 3-2 victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology this evening in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Walter Brown Arena.

Aufiero's team-leading fifth goal of the season broke a 2-2 tie, after Wentworth had evened the score earlier in the period on a power play goal. Stonehill is now unbeaten in its last six contests (4-0-2) since opening the season with a pair of losses.

Juniors Richard Harris (Grand Island, New York/Valley Jr. Warriors) and Connor Fallon (Weymouth, Massachusetts/South Shore Kings) also found the back of the net for the Skyhawks, while senior defenseman Brendan Greene (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Boston Advantage) and juniors Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, New York/Boston Bulldogs) and Garrett White (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Boston Bulldogs) recorded assists.

Senior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) made 20 saves in net to improve to 3-1-2 between the pipes this season.

Sophomore defenseman Chris Domsodi (Kirkland, Quebec/Lachine) led Wentworth with two points on a goal and an assist, while senior forward Kevin Crowe (Galloway, New Jersey/St. Louis) tallied his team-best fifth goal of the season. Junior Stephen McManus (Westwood, Massachusetts/Salem State) and freshman Brian Farkas (Shoreline, Washington/Weyburn) recorded assists for the Leopards.

Senior netminder Alex Peck (Kirkland, Quebec/New York) stopped 23 of the 26 shots that he saw this evening, but his record dropped to 3-3 on the season with the loss.

Stonehill capitalized on an early power-play opportunity, as Greene and Dorgan set up Harris for his third goal of the season just 1:52 into the contest after Farkas was whistled for a slashing penalty. Greene leads Stonehill with six assists so far this season.

Wentworth evened the score less than three minutes later, however, when McManus sent a pass from behind the net to Domsodi, who was waiting in the slot to rifle the equalizer past Tasiopoulos.

Fallon, who recorded two points in Stonehill's last game, gave the Skyhawks the lead for the second time midway through the period when he picked up a loose puck near the blue line and sent a shot through traffic that found its way into the net. Stonehill outshot Wentworth 11-6 through the opening 20 minutes and carried its one-goal lead into the first intermission.

After a three-goal first period, neither team was able to score in a quiet second, although junior forward Thomas Jenkins (Canton, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton) came close with a shot that hit the right post.

The Leopards erased their second deficit of the evening 2:27 into the third period, when Crowe beat Tasiopoulos with the help of Domsodi and Farkas on a Wentworth power play.

Stonehill was 2:40 away from playing in its second straight overtime and third overall this season when Aufiero put the Skyhawks back in front for good following a give-and-go play with White.

Stonehill (4-2-2, 3-0-1) will look to extend its unbeaten streak to seven on Wednesday night, as the Skyhawks are set to visit Westfield State University for a 7:35 p.m. contest. Wentworth (4-5-1, 2-2-1 ECAC NE) is back in action tomorrow night at home against Suffolk University.
