Stonehill Skates To 2-2 Tie With Salve Regina In Home Opener

Senior defenseman Brendan Greene recorded a goal and an assist in Stonehill's 2-2 tie with Salve Regina tonight.

Senior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos registers 34 saves for Skyhawks

FOXBORO, Mass. (November 6, 2014) – Senior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) made 34 saves, including 13 combined in the third period and overtime, as the Stonehill College ice hockey team  skated to a 2-2 tie with Salve Regina University in its home opener this evening in non-conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center.

Senior defenseman Brendan Greene (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) factored into both Stonehill scoring plays with a goal and an assist, while junior forward Garrett White (North Reading, Massachusetts/Malden Catholic) also found the back of the net for the Skyhawks.

With 16:26 elapsed in the first period, Salve Regina junior forward Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas/Texas Tornado) got the Seahawks on the board with the help of senior John Scorcia (Hudson, Florida/Motor City) and freshman Ty Gradwell (Indiana, Pennsylvania/Bay State Breakers).

Midway through the second period, Stonehill pulled even as Greene scored his first of the season on an assist from junior forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, New York/Ossining). Just 1:13 after the Skyhawks netted the equalizer, Salve Regina regained the lead on a goal by junior forward Peter Gintoli (Monroe, Connecticut/Bay State Breakers). Gintoli, who led the Seahawks in scoring a season ago, beat Tasiopoulos top shelf with a backhand flip after blocking a Stonehill shot at the blue line and racing down the length of the ice on a breakaway.

Stonehill's second one-goal deficit of the contest would not last long, however, as White combined with Greene and senior forward Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers Academy) for the Skyhawks' second goal in just 2:26.

Playing with a man advantage after Salve Regina freshman forward James Malone (Beachwood, New Jersey/Bay State Breakers) was whistled for a high sticking penalty, Stonehill tied the score at two when White ripped a shot from the point that found its way past Seahawks junior netminder David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pennsylvania/Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) at the 12:35 mark.

After a second period that saw three goals and 31 shots between the two teams, Chiokadze and Tasiopoulos kept the offenses in check over the final period and the five minute overtime session. Tasiopoulos stopped all 13 of the shots that he saw over the final 25 minutes, while Chiokadze made five saves during the same stretch and 22 overall in the contest.

Tonight's game was the second meeting between Stonehill and Salve Regina in the last two seasons, as the Seahawks posted a 5-3 win in Portsmouth, Rhode Island on November 5th of last year.

Stonehill (0-2-1, 0-0 NE-10) will be off until next Friday night, when the Skyhawks open their NE-10 slate at Assumption College with a 5:35 p.m. contest. Salve Regina (0-0-2, 0-0 ECAC Northeast) is back in action on Saturday night, as the Seahawks are set to open their ECAC Northeast schedule at Suffolk University.
