Junior netminder named NE-10 Goaltender of the Year

EASTON, Mass. (February 25, 2014) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team has placed four student-athletes on the All-Northeast-10 first and second teams as voted on by the league's head coaches, it was announced today.
Junior Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) became the second Stonehill student-athlete to win the NE-10's Goaltender of the Year award, after Mike Manna, 11', was honored as a freshman in 2007-08. Through the semifinal round of the NE-10 Championship, Tasiopoulos leads the conference in goals against average (2.26), save percentage (.931), and winning percentage (.684 in 19 starts). He posted a program record five shutouts in 2013-14, and he was also named the NE-10 Goaltender of the Week on four occasions.
Tasiopoulos made his first start of the season on November 7th against Plymouth State University, making 42 saves but also allowing three goals in a 3-2 defeat. He followed that up in the next game with his first clean sheet of the season, a 20-save blanking of Assumption College. Tasiopoulos registered his second shutout of the season on December 5th, stopping all 40 shots that he faced, including 22 in the third period in a 2-0 win at Trinity College. Shutout number three came on January 15th at Becker College, as Tasiopoulos made 39 saves in a game that would mark the start of Stonehill's program record ten-game winning streak. One week later he would shut Assumption out for the second time in 2013-14, before picking up his fifth clean sheet of the season on January 28th in a 3-0 win over UMass Dartmouth. Stonehill clinched its first-ever NE-10 regular season championship last Tuesday with the help of Tasiopoulos' career-high 46 saves in a 5-4 win over Saint Anselm College.

Joining Tasiopoulos on the NE-10 first team is sophomore forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs). Dorgan opened his season on an 11-game point streak, and he was named the NE-10 Player of the Week on December 2nd for the first time in his career. He ranks third in the NE-10 this season with 1.25 points per game, and his 25 points on nine goals and 16 assists are good for fifth in the league. His point total ranks second on the team despite missing the last six games of the season with an injury.
Senior captain Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) earns a spot on the second team after a season in which he led Stonehill with 26 points on 13 goals and 13 assists, and was named NE-10 Player of the Week three times. Earlier this month, Rooney was named a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon award, which is presented to the best American-born college hockey player competing at the Division II or III level. The senior forward posted seven multi-point games in 2013-14, and his point total is tied for third in the conference. Rooney scored twice against Westfield State University on December 11th, including the game-winning tally with just 2:37 left in the contest.
Sophomore defenseman Travis Army (Englewood, Colo./Worcester Academy) rounds out Stonehill's All-Conference honorees with his selection to the second team. Army, who was named to the NE-10 All-Rookie team last season with ten points, nearly doubled his point total from last year, as he registered 19 on three goals and 16 assists. His total is good for 16th in the conference, and it ranks second among defensemen. Army scored his first career goal on November 5th at Salve Regina University, and he also recorded an assist in a 5-3 loss to the Seahawks. He posted a three-point effort on November 30th at Franklin Pierce University with a goal and two assists, and potted his third goal of the season against UMass Dartmouth.
Stonehill concluded an historic season on Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Saint Michael's College in the semifinal round of the NE-10 Championship. The Skyhawks tied a program record this season with 16 wins, and set a new record with their ten-game winning streak from January 15th to February 20th. Stonehill also became the first team in Northeast-10 hockey history to finish the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record.
