Canton, Mass. native collects award for the third time this season

EASTON, Mass. (February 10, 2014) – Stonehill College senior forward Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Co-Player of the Week for ice hockey, it was announced today by the league office.

Rooney led Stonehill to a 2-0 week, including a 4-2 win over Franklin Pierce University on Thursday night and a 2-1 victory at Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday night, as the Skyhawks extended their winning streak to eight games and improved to 9-0 in conference play. On Thursday night against Franklin Pierce, Rooney scored his 11th goal of the season on a power play in the first period to stake Stonehill to a 2-0 advantage. He then assisted on junior forward Kevin Aufiero's (Canton, Mass./Walpole Express) score midway through the second frame, before finding the back of the net for the second time in the contest and 12th time this season to put Stonehill up 4-1 midway through the third period. Rooney's three-point effort was his sixth multi-point performance of the season.

The senior captain, who last week was named a semi-finalist for the Joe Concannon Award as one of the top American-born college hockey players in New England at the Division II or III level, leads Stonehill this season with 12 goals, and ranks fourth in the NE-10 with 24 points. He has now collected three NE-10 Player of the Week honors this season, and five in his career, after doing so twice last season as a junior.

Rooney was recognized for the first time this season on November 6th, after his first career hat trick powered Stonehill to a 7-3 comeback victory at Southern New Hampshire in the season opener. He was honored again on December 16th, following his two-goal effort in a 4-3 comeback win against Westfield State. His three Player of the Week honors this season are more than any other player in the conference. Sophomore forwards Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs) and Garrett White (Wakefield, Mass./Pomfret School) have also earned one Player of the Week award each this season, giving Stonehill a total of five.

The senior forward has registered 86 points on 46 goals and 40 assists in 96 career games. As a freshman in 2010-11, Rooney totaled 13 points on ten goals and three assists, earning one NE-10 Rookie of the Week honor in the process. The following season, the forward scored eight goals to go with nine assists for 17 total points. Rooney had a breakout season as a junior in 2012-13, as he recorded 32 points evenly with 16 goals and 16 assists, while earning two Northeast-10 Player of the Week honors.

Stonehill (14-9, 9-0) can match the longest winning streak in program history on Saturday night, as the Skyhawks are set to host Assumption College at the Foxboro Sports Center at 5:40 p.m. The contest will serve as both senior night for Rooney and classmates Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings) and Andrew Miller (Oxford, Conn./Kent School), as well as the Purple and White Game for the hockey team. Stonehill will then wrap up its regular season at home on Tuesday, February 18th against Saint Anselm College. The Skyhawks have already clinched home-ice advantage for the opening round of the NE-10 Championship, which will be held on Saturday, February 22nd at 7:30 p.m.
