Tasiopoulos posts fifth shutout of the season, sixth of career

FOXBORO, Mass. (January 28, 2014) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team utilized junior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos' (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) program-record fifth shutout of the season and three goals in the final ten minutes to defeat visiting UMass Dartmouth, 3-0, tonight in non-conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center. Stonehill has now won five games in a row, matching its longest streak since the 2009-10 season.

Sophomore defenseman Travis Army (Englewood, Colo./Worcester Academy) broke the scoreless tie with 8:37 remaining in the contest when he fired a wrist shot from the point, beating UMass Dartmouth netminder Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Alta.) for his third goal of the season. Army entered tonight's action with 16 points, good for ninth-most in the Northeast-10 and tops among defensemen.

Stonehill added an insurance goal at the 18:12 mark of the third period on sophomore forward Kevin Airoldi's (Kennebunk, Maine/Boston Junior Rangers) unassisted tally, and classmate Dan Graham (Billerica, Mass./Williston Northampton) potted an empty netter with six seconds remaining in the contest to seal Stonehill's win.

Tasiopoulos, who was named the NE-10 Goaltender of the Week yesterday for the fourth time this season, led Stonehill again tonight by stopping all 34 of the shots that he faced, including 18 in the second period. The junior extended his own single-season program record to five shutouts tonight, and his six career clean sheets are also the most in Stonehill history.

Neither team was able to capitalize on its power play opportunities, as both Stonehill and UMass Dartmouth were 0-4 with a man advantage.

Stonehill (11-9-0, 6-0-0) will return to Northeast-10 play on Saturday, as the Skyhawks are set to take on Franklin Pierce University at 8 p.m. in Winchendon, Mass. With a win over the Ravens, Stonehill can pick up two more points in the NE-10 standings, as Stonehill beat Franklin Pierce 10-3 on November 30th. The Skyhawks can also extend their winning streak to six games, a run last matched in the 2006-07 campaign. UMass Dartmouth (4-12-2, 4-7-0 MASCAC) will also be in action on Saturday at Fitchburg State University.
