Junior Kevin Aufiero scored twice tonight to lead Stonehill past Assumption, 3-0.

Skyhawks post fourth shutout of 2013-14 campaign, setting a new school record

WORCESTER, Mass. (January 22, 2014) – Junior forward Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Mass./Walpole Express) scored two goals and junior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) registered a 29-save shutout as the Stonehill College ice hockey team defeated Assumption College tonight, 3-0, in Northeast-10 action at Charles J. Buffone Arena. Stonehill has now won three consecutive games for the first time this season, and the Skyhawks improved their perfect NE-10 record to 5-0 in the process.

Aufiero fueled Stonehill's attack with goals in the second and third periods, and sophomore forward Garrett White (Wakefield, Mass./Pomfret School) sandwiched a power play score in between to round out the Skyhawk offense tonight. Sophomore defenseman Scott Rolph (Bow, N.H./Tilton School) recorded two assists, helping to set up the first two goals of the contest.

White, who made his Stonehill debut a week ago in a 2-0 shutout of Becker College, has now scored a goal in all three of the games that he has played. He also recorded an assist tonight, as did senior captain Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School), junior defenseman Brendan Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Boston Advantage), and sophomore forward Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y./Valley Jr. Warriors).

Tasiopoulos, who was named the Northeast-10 Goaltender of the Week on Monday after earning his school-record third shutout of the season last week, broke his own mark tonight with the 29-save effort. Four shutouts in a season is also a new Stonehill team record. The junior stopped four shots in the first period, 14 in the second, and 11 in the closing frame. He now has five shutouts in his career.

Stonehill picks up two points in the NE-10 standings after beating Assumption for the second time this season by matching 3-0 final scores. The Skyhawks topped the Greyhounds at the Foxboro Sports Center on November 13th, a game in which Tasiopoulos posted his first shutout of the season.

Despite taking the loss, Assumption freshman goaltender Nick Commesso (Marshfield, Mass./Governor's Academy) did his best to keep the Greyhounds in the contest, as he made a game-high 39 saves, including 20 in an opening period in which he kept Stonehill off the scoreboard.

Stonehill (9-9-0, 5-0-0 NE-10) will look to run its perfect conference mark to 6-0 on Saturday afternoon when it plays host to Southern New Hampshire University. The Penmen sit just behind the Skyhawks in the conference standings at 4-1 and 12-5-1 overall. Assumption (3-12-2, 0-4-1 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday against Franklin Pierce University.
