Skyhawks improve to 4-0 in Northeast-10 play
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (January 20, 2014)– The Stonehill College ice hockey team used five different goal scorers and a 36-save effort from junior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) to defeat Saint Michael's College tonight, 5-3, in Northeast-10 action at Cairns Arena.
Sophomore forwards Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs), Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y./Valley Jr. Warriors), and Dan Graham (Billerica, Mass./Williston Northampton), and senior captain Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) led Stonehill's offense tonight, as each player registered two points on one goal and one assist.
Sophomore forward Garrett White (Wakefield, Mass./Pomfret School), who scored in his first game in a Stonehill uniform the last time out against Becker College, found the back of the net again tonight for his second tally in as many contests.
Classmate Travis Army (Englewood, Colo./Worcester Academy) chipped in with two assists, while sophomore defenseman Connor Fallon (Weymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings) and junior forward Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Mass./Walpole Express) added one assist each.
Tasiopoulos, who was named the Northeast-10 Goaltender of the Week earlier today for the third time this season, was solid between the pipes despite allowing three goals. The 2011-12 NE-10 Rookie of the Year stopped 12 shots in the first period, 14 in the second, and all 10 that came his way in the third period to preserve the win for Stonehill.

Saint Michael's offense tonight consisted of two goals from junior forward Jeremy Wong (Montreal, Quebec/Tilton School), and another from classmate William Cote (Quebec City, Quebec/Rice Memorial Prep). Junior forward AJ Pieprzak (Barrie, Ont./Ridley College) also contributed two assists for the Purple Knights.
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on White's score just 3:58 into the first period, but Saint Michael's was able to capitalize on a 5-3 opportunity after Graham and Fallon were sent off for a pair of minor penalties less than 40 seconds apart.
Cote tied the score at the 6:39 mark of the period, and the Purple Knights grabbed a 2-1 advantage less than a minute later on Wong's first score of the game. Stonehill would tie the game again, however, on Graham's tally with 14:40 elapsed in the first period, and then take the lead for good on Dorgan's eighth goal of the season with 1:17 left in the opening frame.
Harris upped Stonehill's lead to two, at 4-2, with his team-leading tenth goal of the season early in the second period, but Wong kept the home team within striking distance, as he beat Tasiopoulos with 1:12 left before the second intermission. The Skyhawks would keep the Purple Knights off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest, and Rooney potted an empty netter with less than a minute left in the game for his tenth goal of the season, tying Harris for the team lead.
Stonehill (8-9-0, 4-0-0 NE-10) will look to win its third consecutive game for the first time this season when the Skyhawks travel to Worcester, Mass. on Wednesday night to take on conference rival Assumption College. Stonehill then returns home to the Foxboro Sports Center on Saturday afternoon for the first time since December 11th, as the Skyhawks will play host to Southern New Hampshire University. Saint Michael's (1-13-1, 0-3-0 NE-10) will try to snap its current five game losing streak on Friday night when the Purple Knights host the University of Southern Maine.
