Tasiopoulos named Goaltender of the Week

EASTON, Mass. (December 16, 2013) – Stonehill College senior captain Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) and junior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) have both earned weekly ice hockey honors from the Northeast-10 Conference for their efforts last week.

Rooney earns Player of the Week honors after fueling Stonehill's 4-3 comeback win over Westfield State on Wednesday night with his second multi-goal game of the season. The senior gave Stonehill a 2-1 lead 7:27 into the second period with his first score of the game, and put the Skyhawks ahead for good with his game-winner with under three minutes remaining in the contest.

Rooney now ranks second on the team and fifth in the NE-10 with 13 points on eight goals and five assists. His goal total is good for first on Stonehill and second in the conference, behind only Joe Collins of Southern New Hampshire University.

Rooney has now won the NE-10 Player of the Week award four times in his career, after doing so twice last season and once earlier this season. As a sophomore in 2011-12, Rooney finished 11th overall in the NE-10 with eight goals. As a junior last season, he doubled his goal total to 16, while also adding 16 assists. His 32 total points was good for second overall in the NE-10.

Tasiopoulos collects his second Goaltender of the Week award this season, and fourth of his career, following a 1-1 week in which the junior posted a 3.04 goals against average and .918 save percentage.

Tasiopoulos

Tasiopoulos opened up his week with a 41 save performance in Stonehill's 3-1 loss to the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday night. The Norwell, Mass. native followed that effort up by stopping 26 of the 29 shots that he saw in a 4-3 win over Westfield State on Wednesday. Overall, Tasiopoulos made 67 saves in Stonehill's two contests last week.

In eight games in goal this year, Tasiopoulos has posted a 2.76 goals against average, good for third in the NE-10. He has also recorded two shutouts this season, a 20-save clean sheet on November 13th against Assumption College, and a 40-save blanking of Trinity College on December 5th.

Stonehill (6-6-0, 3-0-0 NE-10) wrapped up the first half of its season by defeating Westfield State on Wednesday night. The Skyhawks are off until January 10th, when they travel to Brockport, N.Y. for a contest with the College of Brockport. Stonehill will be back at the Foxboro Sports Center on January 25th, when it plays host to Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 action.
