Tasiopoulos posts second shutout of season, third of career
HARTFORD, Conn. (December 5, 2013) – Backed by a 40-save shutout from junior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) and a second period goal from sophomore forward Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y./Valley Jr. Warriors), the Stonehill College ice hockey team earned a 2-0 road victory at Trinity College tonight in non-conference action on Williams Rink at the Koeppel Community Sports Center.
For the second time this season Tasiopoulos was perfect between the pipes, as he withstood a barrage of shots throughout the course of the contest, including a season-high 22 in the third period. The junior also made five saves in the opening period and 13 in the second to preserve Stonehill's second non-conference win of the season.
Tasiopoulos has made the most of his five starts so far in the 2013-14 campaign, as he posted a 20-save shutout against Northeast-10 foe Assumption College on November 13th, and also came within three saves of matching his career-high of 45 stops in Stonehill's 3-2 loss to Plymouth State on November 7th. Following tonight's clean-sheet, Tasiopoulos now owns the top goals-against average in the NE-10, at 2.00.
Harris provided all the offense Stonehill would need tonight, as his tally at the 4:47 mark of the second period proved to be the game winner. The sophomore has now scored in four consecutive games, and he ranks third on the team with five goals.
Sophomore forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs) provided the assist on Harris' goal, giving him a team-best ten helpers this season, and upping his team-leading point total to 17. Dorgan leads the NE-10 with 1.89 points per game, and he has registered a point in all nine contests this season.
Classmate Anthony D'Elia (Stamford, Conn./Gunnery School) added an empty net goal with five seconds left in the game to seal Stonehill's victory. The score was D'Elia's first of the season.
Despite taking the loss tonight, Trinity sophomore netminder Nathaniel Heilbron (West Vancouver, British Columbia/Lawrence Academy) did his best to keep the Bantams within striking distance throughout, as he stopped 30 of the 31 shots that he saw.
Neither team was able to capitalize on its power play opportunities, as Trinity went 0-7 with a man advantage and Stonehill was 0-3.
Following tonight's contest, Stonehill (5-4-0, 3-0-0 NE-10) will head to Providence, R.I. on Saturday night for a 7:10 p.m. faceoff with Johnson & Wales University. The Skyhawks then return home to the Foxboro Sports Center for two contests next week before taking a month hiatus for Winter break. Stonehill will host the Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night, and Westfield State College on Wednesday night at the same time. Trinity (5-2-0, 3-1-0 NESCAC), which had its three-game winning streak snapped tonight, will be back on the ice Saturday night at Manhattanville College.
