Stonehill improves to 3-0 in Northeast-10 play

WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 30, 2013) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team erupted for a season-high six second period goals, as Stonehill downed Franklin Pierce University, 10-3, in Northeast-10 action tonight at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Earlier this season, Stonehill scored five times in the second period of its 6-2 victory over SUNY Canton.

Sophomore forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs), who entered tonight's action as the NE-10's fifth-leading scorer with ten points, added four more on two goals and two assists to help Stonehill remain unbeaten in conference play this season. Classmate Willy Baker (Suffern, N.Y./Hill School) matched Dorgan's two scores with two of his own, and senior captain Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) posted a multi-point effort with two assists.

Sophomore forwards Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y./Valley Jr. Warriors), Nate Soter (Danvers, Mass./Pingree School)  and Dan Graham (Billerica, Mass./Williston Northampton) recorded two points apiece, while junior defenseman Travis Army (Englewood, Colo./Worcester Academy) registered two points on a goal and an assist.

Starting in net for the first time in a Stonehill uniform after transferring from the University of Southern Maine, sophomore goaltender Patrick Farrington (Sandwich, Mass./Bridgton Academy) was solid between the pipes, stopping 35 of the 38 shots that he saw.

Senior defenseman Tyler Cornele (Cape Coral, Fla./The Winchendon School) led Franklin Pierce with two goals, and freshman Alex Schleper (Sutton, Mass./Washington Jr. Nationals) scored as well for the Ravens.

Harris, who scored in each of Stonehill's last two contests, gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage just over a minute into the opening period on assists from Dorgan and Graham. Dorgan doubled Stonehill's lead with his fifth goal of the season on a power play at the 10:40 mark of the first period, before Franklin Pierce got one back on Cornele's tally with 3:40 remaining in the frame.

Sophomore Willy Baker scored twice in Stonehill's 10-3 win at Franklin Pierce tonight.

Sophomore forward Thomas Jenkins (Canton, Mass./Williston Northampton) kicked off Stonehill's six-goal surge in the second period when he deflected senior captain Andrew Miller's (Oxford, Conn./Kent School) shot from the point into the back of the net with 3:56 elapsed, and Army upped Stonehill's lead to 4-1 under a minute later. Dorgan then tallied his second of the contest at the 7:50 mark, before Schleper reduced the Franklin Pierce deficit to 5-2.

The last time Stonehill scored ten goals was on February 18, 2010, when the Skyhawks defeated Southern New Hampshire University, 10-4.

Stonehill cashed in on its only power play opportunity of the night, while Franklin Pierce failed to capitalize, scoring only once in seven man-up opportunities.
