Sophomore Thomas DePoalo scored his second goal of the season in Stonehill's 5-3 loss to Wesleyan tonight.

Skyhawks relinquish 2-1 advantage in final period

FOXBORO, Mass. (November 26, 2013) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team ceded four third period goals after leading 2-1 en route to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Wesleyan University tonight in non-conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center.

Sophomore forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs) added to his team-leading point total with two assists to give him ten this season, and senior captain Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) scored his third goal of the season to lead Stonehill.

Sophomore forwards Thomas DePoalo (Mendham, N.J./Morristown Beard School) and Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y./Valley Jr. Warriors) each added scores as well for the Skyhawks, while defensemen Andrew Miller (Oxford, Conn./Kent School), Travis Army (Englewood, Colo./Worcester Academy), and Brian Furey (Quincy, Mass./BC High) contributed an assist apiece.

Wesleyan was led by senior captain Keith Buehler (Skaneateles, N.Y./Proctor Academy), who tallied two points on a goal and an assist for the Cardinals. Freshman forwards Elliott Vorel (Boonton Township, N.J./Milton Academy) and James Kline (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baystate Breakers) also registered two points each to help Wesleyan earn the comeback victory.

Cardinals sophomore netminder Nolan Daley (Exeter, N.H./Exeter Area) collected his second win of the season by stopping 23 of the 26 shots he saw, including 12 in the third period. His counterpart, Stonehill junior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) was hit with the loss, although he made 30 saves in the contest.

Wesleyan got on the board first with 2:55 remaining in the opening period, as junior forward Connor Ryan (Greenwood, Minn./Minnetonka) beat Tasiopoulos with the help of assists from Kline and freshmen defenseman Robby Harbison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taft School).

Stonehill got the equalizer from Rooney midway through the second frame, and the game would move into the second intermission deadlocked at one. The Skyhawks then grabbed their only lead of the contest 1:29 into the third as Depoalo found the back of the net, but the lead would not last long.

Wesleyan tied the contest under three minutes later on a goal by senior forward Tommy Hartnett (Bronxville, N.Y./Canterbury School), and then pulled ahead on Vorel's team-high sixth of the season at the 7:38 mark.

The Cardinals added some insurance on a breakaway score by sophomore forward Jaren Taenaka (Rosemead, Calif./The Gunnery) and Buehler's goal less than a minute later, to go up 5-2 with under eight minutes remaining. Stonehill got one back when Harris scored his second goal in as many games at the 17:31 mark, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Stonehill (3-3-0, 2-0-0 NE-10) returns to action this Saturday, as the Skyhawks travel to Rindge, N.H. to take on Northeast-10 rival Franklin Pierce University at 7 p.m. Stonehill will not play on its home ice again until December 10th, when the Skyhawks host the Wentworth Institute of Technology. Wesleyan (3-2-0, 2-2-0 NESCAC) will be back on the ice this Saturday as well, as the Cardinals host Wentworth.
