Sophomore forward Robbie Dorgan scored his first two goals of the season in Stonehill's 5-3 loss at Salve Regina tonight.

Skyhawks cede go-ahead goal with under four minutes remaining

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (November 5, 2013) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team scored the game-tying goal with 7:15 remaining in tonight's contest, but allowed Salve Regina University to score twice in the final four minutes, as Stonehill was dealt a 5-3 defeat in non-conference action at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Arena.

Stonehill sophomore forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs) netted his first two goals of the season, the second of which tied the game late in the third period. Sophomore defenseman Travis Army (Englewood, Colo./Worcester Academy) added his first tally of the 2013-14 campaign, and junior forwards Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Mass./Walpole Express) and Stephen Balsamo (Atkinson, N.H./Brewster Academy) each contributed an assist for the Skyhawks.

Salve Regina got out to a first period lead nine minutes into the contest, as junior forward John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla./Motor City) found the back of the net with the help of sophomore forward Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas/Texas Tornado). Stonehill would tie the contest two and a half minutes later on Dorgan's first score of the night, and then take the lead midway through the second period on Army's goal.

The Seahawks would answer, however, with two goals of their own in the final 2:56 of the middle period. Scorcia scored his second of the night on assists from senior defensemen Alex Barr (West Milford, N.J./Curry College) and Trey Rasmussen (Vineyard Haven, Mass./Bridgton Academy), and then Salve Regina regained the lead heading into the third thanks to sophomore forward Peter Gintoli's (Monroe, Conn./Bay State Breakers) tally with just 1:26 left in the second.

Following Dorgan's equalizer with 7:15 to go in the game, sophomore forward Cameron Gaudet (Burlington, Mass./UMass Lowell) gave the Seahawks the lead one final time, as he scored at the 16:02 mark of the third period in what would become the game-winning goal. Salve Regina added an empty-netter with 26 seconds remaining to seal the contest.

Stonehill freshman goaltender Joshua Hickey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Whitby Fury) stopped 22 shots in the loss, while Salve Regina sophomore netminder David Chiokadze (Langhorne, Pa./Philadelphia Jr. Flyers) made 19 saves to earn the victory.

After tonight's loss, Stonehill (1-1, 1-0 NE-10) still leads the all-time series with the Seahawks, 10-9-2. Stonehill returns to action on Thursday night at the Foxboro Sports Center for the Skyhawks 2013 home opener against Plymouth State University. Opening faceoff is set for 6 p.m. Salve Regina (2-0) will be back on the ice this Saturday, when the Seahawks host Suffolk University at 3 p.m.
