Taunton, Mass., native Borges recognized for excellence on and off the ice
EASTON, Mass. (February 13, 2013) – Stonehill College senior captain Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Williston-Northampton) has been selected as a semifinalist for the 13th Annual Joe Concannon Award, The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston announced Tuesday.
The Joe Concannon Award is presented annually to the top American-born college hockey player in New England playing at the NCAA Division II or III level. The award was established to honor the late Joe Concannon and his lifelong devotion to college hockey and college athletics. Concannon was a journalist for the Boston Globe and former sports information director who declined to write about professional sports to focus on collegiate interscholastic athletics.
Borges is in the midst of an outstanding season at Stonehill, leading the Northeast-10 in points (36) and assists (21). The captain also ranks second in the league in points scored in NE-10 contests, notching 16 points in nine games, and also ranks sixth nationally in scoring and fifth among players in New England.
Borges has recorded at least one point in 17 of 23 games this season, including 11 multi-point games. He earned NE-10 Player of the Week honors on January 22, following a two goal, one assist performance against conference foe Franklin Pierce University.

In 97 career games, Borges has recorded 29 goals and 57 assists for 86 points. During his junior campaign he was named captain and led the team to the NE-10 Conference Championship Game. He scored four goals and dished out 17 assists for 21 points that year. The forward has notched three career game-winning goals, most recently in a win over UMass Dartmouth on January 29.
Besides his on-ice achievements, Borges has collected several academic honors throughout his college career. He is a seven-time member of the NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, a NE-10 Academic All-Conference honoree, a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, an Edwin H. Sutherland Honor Society member, as well as a two-time Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award Winner. Borges was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District I At-Large Team for his academic and athletic excellence. The forward was also a 2011 and 2012 recipient of the St. Thomas Aquinas Medal for having the highest grade point average on his team.
Borges, a criminology major at Stonehill, participated in a year-long internship with the Brockton Public Counsel Service during his junior year. He also completed a summer internship with the Department of Defense in Boston to better understand the justice system in the State of Massachusetts.
Borges is an active member of the community around Stonehill, participating in many community programs such as the Special Olympics and Team IMPACT. He and his teammates have "drafted" fifth-grader Jake Quinn through Team IMPACT (Inspire, Motivate, Play Against Challenges, Together). Borges is one of 20 semifinalists picked from the six D-II/D-III conferences across New England. He is the only member of the Northeast-10 Conference and Division II among the semifinalists.
Stonehill, having clinched a spot in the upcoming NE-10 Tournament, will look to improve its Conference standing over its final two regular season contests. The Skyhawks visit Assumption College on Saturday at 4:35 p.m., before closing out the regular season at Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, February 19, at 7 p.m.
