Franklin Pierce Holds Off Stonehill, 5-4

Ravens get a late power-play goal to push past the Skyhawks.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (February 2, 2013) – The Franklin Pierce Ravens scored a power-play goal with 0:54 seconds remaining to defeat the Stonehill Skyhawks in a Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey matchup Saturday evening at the Foxboro Sports Center.

Senior captain Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) led the way for Franklin Pierce with a goal and an assist. Freshman Doug Usseglio (Waltham, Mass.), graduate student Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.), and sophomore Timothy Sullivan (Rye, N.H.) also recorded a goal and an assist for the Ravens. Kyle Craig (Quincy, Mass.), Dino Federico (Canton, Mass), Michael Carr (South Boston, Mass.), and Sean Dunn (Quincy, Mass.) all earned assists for Franklin Pierce, who claimed two NE-10 conference points with the win.

Goaltender Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.) stopped 30 shots including 14 third period saves for Franklin Pierce. O'Brien also earned eight saves and held Stonehill scoreless in the second period. Sophomore Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) recorded 27 saves for the Skyhawks, who outshot the Ravens 34-32 on the night.

Freshman Dan Graham (Billerica, Mass.) earned two points on a goal and an assist for the Skyhawks. Nate Soter (Danvers, Mass.) added a goal and an assist of his own, totaling four points in his last two games following a two assist performance Tuesday night against UMass Dartmouth. Also earning two points for Stonehill was junior assistant captain Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) who dished out two assists on the night. Junior defenseman Andrew Miller (Oxford, Conn.) notched his second goal of the season for the Skyhawks, who fell to (10-12-0) on the season.

After a back-and-forth first 10 minutes of the game, Stonehill jumped on the board thanks to Miller's tally at 12:44 of the first. A great fore-check caused a Franklin Pierce turnover in its own end. Junior Bill Carey collected the loose puck and tossed it to Graham, who fed it in front for Miller, who slipped it past O'Brien for the goal.

Franklin Pierce answered less than two minutes later when Sweeney capitalized on a power-play opportunity to tie the game at 1-1. The Ravens took the lead just before the end of the first when Usseglio cleaned up a Federico rebound to score his first goal of the year. The Ravens added to their led early in the second period when Sullivan claimed his first goal of the season at 2:58 of the second.

Stonehill launched an early comeback bid in the third when Graham netted his seventh of the year at 4:37 of the stanza. Franklin Pierce answered back with a goal just 0:57 seconds later to put the Raven lead back up to two. The Skyhawks refused to quit though, as Soter made it a one goal game at 6:46 of the third.

Stonehill earned a power-play opportunity at 8:15 of the third and quickly netted the game-tying goal on a tally from Brendan Greene (Weymouth, Mass.). The game remained tied until 19:06 of the third, when McCarron launched a slap-shot from just inside the blue-line that found its way past Tasiopoulos for the winner.

Next up for Stonehill (10-12-0, 5-3 NE-10) is a matchup with NE-10 rival Southern New Hampshire next Saturday, February 9 at the Foxboro Sports Center. Franklin Pierce moves to (5-10-3, 3-4-1 NE-10) and will play host to Saint Michaels on Tuesday, February 5.
