Stonehill Offense Erupts In Season Opener Versus Johnson & Wales, 8-3

Skyhawks eight goals most in season opener since 2006

Junior forward Bryan Rooney's game-tying goal in the first period sparked six consecutive goals for the Skyhawks offense.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (October 31, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team downed Johnson & Wales University, 8-3, in its 2012-13 season opener on Wednesday night in non-conference action at the Lynch Arena/Blackstone Valley Sports Center.

Freshman forward Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y./Valley Jr. Warriors) and senior captain Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Williston Northampton) scored a pair of goals and dished out one assist each to lead a bevy of Skyhawk goal scorers. Freshman Nate Soter (Danvers, Mass./Pingree School) added one goal and one assist while classmate Willy Baker (Suffern, N.Y./Hill School) and junior forward Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings) dished out two helpers apiece.

Trailing 2-1 in the first period, junior assistant captain and forward Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) jumpstarted a string of six unanswered goals for Stonehill with his first marker of the season, an unassisted power play tally, at 15:47 of the first period.

Stonehill received another goal from freshman forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y./Boston Bulldogs) in the first period (17:02) to make it 3-2, three more markers in the second period and two in the third to claim the victory.

Stonehill's eight goals are the most since 2006 when the Skyhawks defeated Suffolk, 7-3, on November 9, 2006.

Sophomore goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) made 21 saves in for the Skyhawks while Wildcats senior netminder Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio/Queen City Steam) turned away 24 shots on goal.

Stonehill (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) hosts SUNY Canton this Friday, November 2 at the Foxboro Sports Center with opening faceoff scheduled for 6:20 p.m. Johnson & Wales (0-0-1) welcomes Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, November 3 at 7:45 p.m.
