Stonehill Rallies Past Assumption, 3-2, on Senior Day

FOXBORO, Mass. (February 18, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team notched its third-straight victory on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action at the Foxboro Sports Center on Senior Day.

Before the game, seniors Timothy Mathews (Mattapoisett, Mass./Phillips Exeter Academy), Matthew Doherty (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy), Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial), Mario Ranalli (Lakeville, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy), Jordan Fine (Walpole, Mass./St. Sebastian's) and Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) were honored for their contributions towards the Stonehill ice hockey program.

Junior forward Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) gave the Skyhawks their first win over the Greyhounds in four tries this season with the game-winning marker at 18:37 of the third period. Greene netted his seventh goal of the year at 13:59 of the third to even the score at 2-2. Sophomore Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) opened up the scoring for Stonehill with an unassisted shorthanded tally at 19:25 of the second period pushing his point streak to seven games. Freshman Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Mass.) added a pair of assists in Stonehill's third-straight victory. Jackson earned his first win of the season turning away 23 shots.

For Assumption, senior forward Pat O'Kane (Hollis, N.H./Bishop Guertin) netted his team-leading 14th goal of the season at 13:39 of the first period. Junior forward Keven Meehan (Melrose, Mass./Austin Prep.) potted his eighth goal of the season and also added an assist for the Greyhounds. Sophomore Nick Mattiello (Johnston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) had two helpers while sophomore goaltender Bobby Bowden (Springfield, Mass./Williston-Northampton) had 42 saves.

Trailing 2-1 midway through the third period, Aufiero corralled a loose puck near the end boards and flicked it to Borges who found a wide open Greene in front of the net for his seventh tally of the season and a 2-2 tie.

At the 18:37 mark, Borges completed the comeback victory netting a top-shelf breakaway goal by utilizing a backhand-to-forehand deke after receiving a two line pass from Aufiero out of Stonehill's defensive zone.

Stonehll (9-11-2, 6-3-1 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm on Tuesday, February 21 at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks have a chance to win a share of the regular season championship with the Greyhounds and Saint Anselm with a victory over the Hawks on Tuesday. Assumption (12-10-1, 7-3-1 NE-10) hosts Worcester State University for their last regular season game on Thursday, February 23 at 7:35 p.m.
