Stonehill Turns Away Southern New Hampshire, 3-1

Gorovitz nets a pair of goals, Tasiopoulos makes 44 saves to lead Skyhawks

FOXBORO, Mass. (January 28, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team earned its first victory of the season at the Foxboro Sports Center on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 triumph over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action.

Junior forward Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Tilton School) led the offense with two goals coming 15 seconds apart in the first period while freshman netminder Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass/Thayer Academy) stopped 44 shots to help the Skyhawks push their record to 1-4-1 at home. Stonehill also received an empty net goal from freshman forward Stephen Balsamo (Atkinson, N.H./Brewster Academy) at the 19:29 mark of the contest.

For Southern New Hampshire, sophomore forward Tyler Pascucci (North Reading, Mass./Winchendon School) potted the Penmen's lone goal at 5:09 of the third period on assists by teammates Christopher Weilandt (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) and Steven Berry (Ashburn, Va./New Hampton School).

Gorovitz opened up the scoring at 8:21 of the first period sending home a shot past Southern New Hampshire goaltender Tyler Holske (Attleboro, Mass.) on feeds from Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./New Hampton School) and Balsamo for his team-leading eighth goal.

Gorovitz tacked onto his team-best goal mark just 15 seconds later as senior forward Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and sophomore forward Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) facilitated the offense for the junior forward.

After Pascucci's goal early in the third stanza, Balsamo sealed the victory at 19:29 with an empty net power play goal on assists from junior defenseman J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass./Tilton School) and Rooney.

Tasiopoulos made a game-high 17 saves in the first period ending with 44 total while Holske stopped 25 shots.

Stonehill (6-8-2, 3-2-1 NE-10) hosts UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, January 31 at the Foxboro Sports Center at 7 p.m. Southern New Hampshire (1-16-1, 0-7-0 NE-10) hosts Assumption College on Saturday, February 4 at 3 p.m.
