Stonehill Claims First Victory Of Season Over Nichols, 2-0

Leahy earns first career collegiate coaching victory 

HARRISVILLE, R.I. (November 12, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team earned its first win of the season on Saturday night defeating Nichols College, 2-0, at Levy Rink in non-conference action. 

Head coach Patrick Leahy, currently the tenth coach in Stonehill College men's ice hockey program history, notched his first career collegiate coaching victory in his fifth try. 

Tied 0-0 in the third period, junior forward Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Tilton School) pushed the Skyhawks ahead, 1-0, at 8:35 finishing on feeds from senior forward Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and sophomore forward Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) for his second marker of the season. 

Stonehill secured its first victory of the 2011-12 campaign at 18:17 as Greene set up freshman forward Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Mass.) for a shorthanded tally and his first ever collegiate goal beating Nichols goaltender Dylan Woodring (Rogue River, Ore.) for a 2-0 advantage. 

Skyhawks freshman netminder Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) turned away 36 shots including a game-high 18 in the third period to record his first career collegiate shutout. Woodring made 25 saves for the Bison. 

Stonehill (1-4-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday, November 16 against Southern New Hampshire University, on the road, in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action at 7:30 p.m. Nichols (0-2-1, 0-0-0 ECAC Northeast) travels to Salve Regina for an ECAC Northeast matchup on Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m.
