FOXBORO, Mass. (November 10, 2011) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team was denied its first victory of the season as Plymouth State University edged the Skyhawks, 4-3, in overtime on Thursday night in non-conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center.

Junior forward Matt Aponte (Plano, Texas) potted the game-winning goal just 24 seconds into overtime and dished out two assists to lead the Panthers offensively. Plymouth State also received goals from Larry Kincaid (Wasilla, Alaska), Phil Moore (Lower Onslow, NS/Hoosac Prep.) and Seth Phelan (Bristol, Conn.)

Senior forward Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) netted one marker and handed out one assist while Fabio Cuetara (Irvine, Calif.) and Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass.) added goals for the Skyhawks.

Plymouth State opened up the scoring at 6:24 of the first as Kincaid one-timed a feed from Aponte past Stonehill goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) for an early 1-0 lead.

Moore made it 2-0 at 7:02 blasting a shot from the blue line into the top left corner of the net for a 2-0 advantage and his first tally of the season.

In the second, Stonehill responded with goals from Cuetara and Carey to even the score at 2-2.

Cuetara found the back of the net at 6:55 stuffing home sophomore forward Garrett Lessard's (East Sandwich, Mass./Proctor Academy) rebound behind Panthers netminder Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) for his first career collegiate goal and a 2-1 deficit. Carey tied up the contest at 9:05 on the power play firing a shot top-shelf past Astedt after corralling Greene's rebound that ricocheted off the end boards directly in the slot.

In the third period, Greene gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the night at 2:51 sniping a shot under Astedt from the goal line for a 3-2 advantage and his first marker of the season.

Stonehill held the lead until 17:12 of the period when Phelan finished on a one-timer in the slot on assists by Aponte and Kincaid.

At 18:12, Tasiopoulos forced the eventual overtime session robbing senior forward Chris Zaremba (Colorado Springs, Colo/Liberty) with a left pad save on a penalty shot attempt.

In the extra session, Aponte wasted little time drilling home Kincaid's rebound in front of the net behind Tasiopoulos for his first game-winner of the season.

Astedt turned away 32 shots in net including a game-high 13 in the third period while Tasiopoulos had 31 saves.

Stonehill (0-4-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) travels to Nichols College in non-conference action on Saturday, November 12 at 7:40 p.m. Plymouth State (2-0-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) hosts Westfield State in conference play on Tuesday, November 15 at 6 p.m.
