WORCESTER, Mass. (February 5, 2011) – The Stonehill College men’s ice hockey team dropped a 6-3 decision to Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption College Saturday in Worcester, wrapping up their season series with the Greyhounds.

Junior Pat O’Kane (Hollis, N.H.) scored twice and sophomore Keven Meehan (Melrose, Mass.) collected three points on a goal and two assists as Assumption claimed the rubber game of the three-game set. Stonehill freshman Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./Canton) notched his second straight multi-point game with a goal and an assist to lead the Skyhawks, who staged a late rally with a pair of third-period goals from seniors Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and Eric Scholl (Wilmington, Mass./Tilton School) but couldn’t recover from a decisive four-goal run by the Greyhounds.

Rooney scored at 1:56 of the second period to knot the game at 1-1 following an early strike by Assumption junior Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass.), but the Greyhounds opened up a 5-1 lead over the next 20 minutes with a pair of power-play tallies from O’Kane and a goal apiece by sophomore Jaime Vona (West Seneca, N.Y.) and senior Peter Bouchie (Belmont, Mass.) Stonehill clawed back in the late minutes of the third period as Todesca netted his team-leading 12th goal of the season with help from freshman Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and sophomore Sean McNeil (Canton, Mass./Canton), and Rooney set up Scholl’s first of the season on the power play just two minutes later to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Skyhawks put only six shots on target during the final period, though, and Meehan tacked on Assumption’s sixth of the night at 19:23 to seal it.

Junior goaltender Nick Blanchette (Stuart, Fla.) made 25 saves for Assumption, including 14 during the second period. Senior Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) stopped 29 shots in the loss.

Stonehill (4-13-1, 2-4-1 NE-10) will look to improve on their 3-0-1 home record as they play the next four games on their home ice at Foxboro Sports Center, beginning with a non-conference matchup against Salve Regina University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
