Skyhawks Earn Pair Of Conference Hockey Honors

Borges named Player of the Week, Carey is Rookie of the Week as Skyhawks roll past Assumption in return from midseason break

EASTON, Mass. (January 24, 2011) – Stonehill College sophomore Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) and freshman Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) today received Northeast-10 Conference honors for ice hockey from the conference office. Borges was named the NE-10 Player of the Week for the first time, while Carey earned his first career NE-10 Rookie of the Week selection.

Borges tallied a game-high three points on two goals and an assist to lead Stonehill to a 6-2 win over NE-10 rival Assumption College. He collected two points in the opening 15 minutes, picking up an assist on the Skyhawks’ first power play at 4:53 of the first period and following with his first goal of the day ten minutes later to push Stonehill out to an early 4-0 lead. He netted the Skyhawks’ sixth goal on a third-period power play, recording two of his three points with the man advantage to help Stonehill convert a season-high 4 of 7 power-play opportunities.

Carey scored the decisive third goal of the game on the power play at 9:19 of the first period, and followed with an assist on Borges’ first goal as the Skyhawks jumped out to an early advantage. He ranks second in the conference with a pair of game-winning goals, and fourth in scoring among NE-10 freshmen with three goals and four assists for seven total points.

Stonehill (3-10-1, 2-1-1 NE-10) is currently third in the conference standings through the first half of the season. The Skyhawks will visit Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday and Franklin Pierce University on Saturday before returning to their home ice on Wednesday, February 2 to host Framingham State College.
