Skyhawks close out first half of season, look ahead to January’s conference slate

Min Seong Kim scored his first of the year for the Skyhawks.

BOSTON, Mass. (December 9, 2010) – The Stonehill College men’s ice hockey team wrapped up the first half of the season on Thursday evening with a non-conference 4-1 loss to Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Sophomore Min Seong Kim (Seoul, South Korea/Northwood School) scored the lone goal for the Skyhawks, his first of the season, and junior goaltender Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) finished the night with 29 saves. Wentworth had four different players score as freshman Chris Azzano (Oshawa, Ont.) made 18 saves to earn the decision in net.

Sophomore Anthony Principato (Holmdel, N.J.) put the Leopards on the board just 43 seconds into the game, putting back his own rebound after Jackson saved the initial attempt. Jackson made 12 first-period stops to hold the Skyhawks’ deficit at one goal, but Wentworth added a second tally early in the second period by junior Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) from Principato and freshman Cameron Gibson (Valencia, Calif.)

The Leopards pushed their lead to 3-0 when freshman Fred Gervasi (Mississauga, Ont.) netted his first career goal at 10:59 of the second period, converting a shorthanded attempt with freshman Patrick Rice (West Des Moines, Iowa) in the box for boarding. Stonehill managed nine second-period shots, but couldn’t solve Azzano until early in the third, when Kim put one past him at 4:52 from juniors Mario Ranalli (Lakeville, Mass.) and Jordan Fine (Walpole, Mass.)

Wentworth responded with their fourth of the night at 5:57, the sixth of the year for freshman Cory Lillie (East Hampton, N.Y.), with help from senior Kyle Richardson (San Jose, Calif.) and sophomore Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) The Skyhawks were able to kill off their final penalty and hold the gap at 4-1, as the two teams combined to go 0 for 10 on the power play.

Stonehill (2-10-1, 1-1-1 NE-10) is off until January 22, when the Skyhawks will host conference rival Assumption College at 2 p.m.
