NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (December 4, 2010) – Stonehill College scored late in the third period to force overtime, but fell 3-2 to UMass Dartmouth in non-conference men’s ice hockey action Saturday evening.

Freshman Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./Canton) netted the game-tying goal for the Skyhawks, and sophomore Tyler Gordon (Franklin, Mass./Xavarian Brothers) set them up with an early lead with his first-period goal, but UMass Dartmouth sophomore Dan Dempsey (Norwell, Mass.) scored twice to lead the Corsairs to the overtime victory. Junior goaltender Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made 30 saves for Stonehill, and senior Collin Tracy (Medford, Mass.) recorded 28 at the other end for UMass Dartmouth.

Stonehill held a 1-0 lead through two periods after Gordon capitalized on a 5-on-3 advantage on the power play to put away his first goal of the season at 14:13 of the first period, in which the Skyhawks outshot UMass Dartmouth 12-6. Junior Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) picked up his team-leading sixth assist of the season and sophomore J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass./Milton) added his second, while Jackson turned back 15 shots by the Corsairs through the first 40 minutes to send the Skyhawks into the final period with the lead.

The advantage disappeared early, though, as senior Jason Stahl (Londonderry, N.H.) tied the game at 2:57 of the third period, and after having totaled 15 shots on goal through the first two periods, the Corsairs doubled their output with 15 on target in the third. Ten minutes later, Stahl set up Dempsey on the power play to nudge UMass Dartmouth ahead 2-1 with eight minutes remaining.

A trio of freshmen stepped up to force overtime for the Skyhawks when Rooney took a feed in front of the net from Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) via Garrett Lessard (East Sandwich, Mass./Williston Northampton School), and drilled it past Tracy to recover for a 2-2 tie heading into extra time.

Dempsey connected again at 3:05 of the overtime period, collecting a loose puck in the Stonehill zone and finding the back of the net to end it.

Stonehill (2-9, 1-1 NE-10) wraps up a five-game road trip tonight and will next host Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
