Panthers’ pair of third-period goals dooms Skyhawks

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (December 2, 2010) – Stonehill College had a third-period rally fall short for the second consecutive game as they dropped a 3-2 decision to Plymouth State University in a non-conference men’s ice hockey matchup Thursday night.

Senior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) netted his conference-leading eighth goal of the season in the third period, and junior Matt Doherty (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) added a power-play tally for the Skyhawks, who got 23 saves from senior goaltender Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral). Plymouth State sophomore Richie Zobak (Evergreen Park, Ill.) scored the Panthers’ first goal of the night on the power play, and sophomores Sean Foley (Weymouth, Mass.) and JC Richardson (Fort Collins, Colo.) connected in the third period to unlock a 1-1 tie. Sophomore Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) made 21 stops in the net for Plymouth State.

Zobak put the Panthers on the board at 11:37 of the first period, netting a goal from the right side on the power play, while the Skyhawks put 12 first-period shots on target but could not connect against Astedt. Doherty broke through for Stonehill early in the second period, converting with two seconds left on the Skyhawks’ first power play of the evening to snap an 0 for 8 streak with the man advantage over the past three games. Chapdelaine turned back 11 shots by the Panthers in the second period to send the game to the second intermission tied at 1.

Foley notched a goal and an assist in the third period to put Plymouth State on top, netting the go-ahead goal at 8:22 and setting up Richardson four minutes later for the eventual winner. For the second game in a row, Todesca pushed back late in the third period to bring Stonehill back to within one goal, but the Panthers held on to the slim lead as Stonehill was limited to three shots on goal over the final 20 minutes.

Stonehill (2-8, 1-1 NE-10) visits UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. before hitting their home ice Tuesday to host Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m.
