Trinity Pulls Away to 5-1 Win Over Stonehill

Four unanswered goals ground Skyhawks

Derek Chapdelaine finished with 32 saves.

HARTFORD, Conn. (November 28, 2010) – The Stonehill College men’s ice hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to host Trinity College in a non-conference matchup Sunday evening.

Junior Jordan Fine (Walpole, Mass./Saint Sebastian's) scored the lone goal for Stonehill, with an assist from junior Tim Mathews (Mattapoisett, Mass./Phillips Exeter Academy), to tie the game early in the second period, but Trinity responded with four straight goals to rally against senior goaltender Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral), who finished the night with 32 saves.

Ten different players recorded points for Trinity and freshman goaltender Benjamin Coulthard (South Windsor, Conn./Pomfret) totaled 19 stops as the Bantams claimed their first  win of the season. Sophomore Michael Blake (Wakefield, Mass./Belmont Hill) opened up a 1-0 lead just 3:28 into the game, and Trinity went on to outshoot the Skyhawks 16-6 in the first period but couldn’t get past Chapdelaine again before the first intermission. Fine came back to score at 1:17 of the second period as he and Mathews each picked up their first points of the season, but the Stonehill offense went quiet with the game tied at 1-1, managing only three shots over the rest of the second period.

The Bantams added two goals late in the period to retake the lead, as junior Mike DeMayo (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) converted on the power play at 17:22 for the eventual winner, and senior Jake Gaffey (North Hampton, N.H./St. John's Prep) sneaked in a second at 19:59 to send Trinity to the second intermission with a 3-1 advantage. The Skyhawks couldn’t respond against Coulthard over the final 20 minutes, putting nine shots on goal and failing to convert their second and final power play of the evening.

Sophomore Sebastian Kimmel (Chico, Calif./Canterbury) and junior Sean McCarthy (Duxbury, Mass./Roxbury Latin) added a pair of third-period goals to push the final margin to 5-1, while sophomore Zachary Lombardi (Locust Valley, N.Y./Portledge Prep) and freshman Larry Bero (Foxboro, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) each finished with two assists.

Stonehill (2-6, 1-1 NE-10) plays three more games on the road this week, next visiting Worcester State College on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks are back on their home ice on December 7 to host Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m.
