Cardinals rally from early deficit to get past Skyhawks

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (November 23, 2010) – Stonehill College got out to an early 2-0 lead but gave up three second-period goals to fall 3-2 to Wesleyan University in non-conference men’s hockey action Tuesday evening.
Freshman Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) scored in his second straight game, and sophomore Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) netted his first of the year for the Skyhawks. Junior goaltender Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) finished the night with 23 saves.
Wesleyan got a flurry of second-period goals from freshmen Tommy Hartnett (Bronxville, N.Y.) and Keith Buehler (Skaneateles, N.Y.) and sophomore Nick Craven (Fort Collins, Colo.), and freshman Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore Adam Kaiser (Stony Point, N.Y.) each picked up a pair of assists. Sophomore goaltender Matt Hadge (Canton, Mass.) blanked the Skyhawks through the final two periods for 24 saves on the night.
Carey got Stonehill off to an early start with the game’s first goal at 11:23 of the first period from junior Matt Doherty (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy). Gorovitz capitalized on a Cardinals turnover in their own end to send the Skyhawks ahead 2-0 just four minutes later, beating Hadge over his shoulder for his first goal of the year. Jackson held off Wesleyan with 10 first-period saves at the other end and Stonehill killed off their first penalty of the evening to take the two-goal advantage into the break.
Wesleyan cut the lead in half with Hartnett’s unassisted tally at 5:23 of the second period, and Buehler tied it up three minutes later from Tasiopoulos and Kaiser on the power play. Craven netted the eventual game-winner at 10:55 with the man advantage, as Wesleyan went 2 for 5 on the power play and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill to overcome the early Stonehill advantage.
Jackson made nine stops over the final period to hold off the Cardinals, but Stonehill was shut out by Hadge at the other end on six third-period attempts.
Stonehill (2-5, 1-1 NE-10) is back on the ice on Sunday for a non-conference matchup at Trinity College at 6 p.m.
