Stonehill Rallies To Drop Franklin Pierce 4-1

Skyhawks score four unanswered goals; Ravens can’t solve Chapdelaine in net

Derek Chapdelaine made 26 saves to hold the Ravens to one goal.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (November 20, 2010) – Stonehill College scored four straight goals in the final two periods to claim a 4-1 home victory over Franklin Pierce University in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Saturday, snapping a four-game losing streak.

Seven different players recorded a point for Stonehill as the Skyhawks responded to an early Ravens lead with a balanced offensive attack. Senior defenseman Michael Tuplin (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) scored just before the second intermission to bring Stonehill back from a 1-0 deficit, and freshmen Bill Carey (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass./Canton) each potted their first career goal in the third period. Senior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) tacked on an empty-net score.

Senior goalkeeper Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) allowed a single goal to Franklin Pierce, locking the Ravens out after 7:16 of the second period and finishing the night with 26 saves to claim his first victory of the season.

Franklin Pierce got a second-period goal from sophomore Dino Federico (Canton, Mass./Walpole Express), and freshman goalkeeper Dave O’Brien (Groton, Mass./Northern Cyclones) stopped 32 shots.

Michael Tuplin scored the tying goal just seconds before the end of the second period.

Stonehill put 19 shots on goal in the first period to the Ravens’ five, but O’Brien held them off early and the game remained scoreless until the eighth minute of the second period, when Federico sent Franklin Pierce ahead 1-0 with an assist from junior Anthony Chighisola (Whitman, Mass./Archbishop Williams). The Skyhawks came back to tie it when Tuplin slipped a shot past O’Brien with just 15 seconds remaining in the period, getting assists from sophomores Tyler Beauregard (Essex Junction, Vt./Tilton School) and Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) and getting Stonehill back in the game before the break.

The Skyhawks capitalized on their offensive momentum early in the third period. With Franklin Pierce freshman Bryan Colella (Medfield, Mass./CD Selects) in the box for high-sticking, junior Matt Doherty (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) had a shot knocked away by O’Brien, and Carey put home the rebound to convert on the power play and send the Skyhawks ahead for good. Chapdelaine stopped all seven shots he faced in the third period to protect the lead, and Stonehill added a pair of insurance goals as Rooney scored unassisted at 7:06 of the third period, and Todesca dropped one into an empty Ravens net with ten seconds remaining.

Stonehill (2-4, 1-1 NE-10) will play the next five games on the road, beginning with a visit to Wesleyan University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return to their home ice on December 7 for a conference matchup with Southern New Hampshire University at 7 p.m.
