Nichols Holds Off Stonehill, 5-3

Skyhawks net three second-period goals but Nichols rallies in third

Angelo Todesca scored twice in the second period.

DUDLEY, Mass. (November 13, 2010) – The Stonehill College men’s ice hockey team traded goals with host Nichols College throughout a six-goal second period, but fell 5-3 after two unanswered third-period scores by Nichols in non-conference action Saturday evening.

Senior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) netted a pair of goals and sophomore George DeMello (Cotuit, Mass./Tabor Academy) added one on the power play, while senior Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) racked up 58 saves in the net for Stonehill. Nichols was led by a three-point night from sophomore Zach Kohn (Hartland, Wis.), with a goal and two assists, and senior JoJo Bojanowski (Washington Township, Mich.) picked up a goal and an assist in the third period. Sophomore Ryan Casey (Pelham, N.H.) made 23 saves to earn the decision for the Bison.

Nichols put 19 shots on goal in the first period to Stonehill’s five, but Chapdelaine came up with the saves to keep the game scoreless through the first intermission.  Kohn got the Bison on the board with a power-play goal at 0:47 of the second period, matched by Todesca at 5:03 with help from sophomores Tyler Beauregard (Essex Junction, Vt./Tilton School) and Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy). Following Todesca’s second of the night from sophomore Shawn Unis (Sandwich, Mass./Proctor Academy) just over five minutes later, Nichols jumped ahead again with a goal from senior Matt Sayer (Lowell, Mass.), but DeMello converted a power play for the Skyhawks just before the end of the period to tie the game at 3.

Bojanowski came back with the eventual winner just 59 seconds into the third period, and set up junior Drew Palmer (North Chelmsford, Mass.) for an insurance tally at 8:42 for the final 5-3 margin.

Stonehill (1-3, 0-0 NE-10) begins Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday at Assumption College, and will drop the puck for next Saturday’s home opener against Franklin Pierce University at 2 p.m.
