Beacons use four-goal second period and Wyman hat trick to notch victory

Sophomore Patrick Greene scored Stonehill's opening goal today against UMass Boston at the PAL/Stovepipe Tournament in Manchester.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (November 28, 2009) - The University of Massachusetts Boston rode a four-goal second period to a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College in first day action of the 2009 Manchester Police Athletic League (PAL)/Stovepipe Tournament at the Ice Den this afternoon.

UMass Boston linemates junior Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) and sophomores Chris Wyman (Bartlett, Ill.) and Bryan Albert (Redlands, Calif.) played a role in four goals, combining on three power play markers as a unit to lead the way to victory. Wyman netted a hat trick, while Albert posted a goal and three assists and Jacona dished four assists.

Sophomore Jimmy Ennis (Roslindale, Mass.) scored two goals for the Beacons, while senior Kris Kranzky (Glendora, Calif.) registered a goal and assist. Sophomore Jeff Van Siclen (Alamo, Calif.) chipped in with two assists.

Senior goaltender Ryan Donovan (Rexford, N.Y.) made 23 saves to preserve the win for UMass Boston. Junior Michael Manna (Framingham, Mass./Xavarian Brothers) stopped 26 shots in goal for Stonehill, including 13 in the third period. UMB finished with a 33-25 advantage in shots on goal for the contest. The Beacons also converted on 3-of-5 power play chances, compared to 0-for-5 efficiency for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill got goals from sophomore Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and freshman Christopher Gorovitz (Framingham, Mass./Framingham).

Wyman opened the scoring for UMass Boston, assisted by Albert and Jacona, with a power play goal 2:41 into the contest. Stonehill evened things up at 7:21 with Greene's second goal of the year, assisted by freshman Tyler Gordon (Franklin, Mass./Xavarian Brothers) and senior captain Peter Roundy (Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union). Jacona and Albert set up Wyman with another power play goal with just 37-seconds left before the first intermission to put the Beacons up for good.

UMB broke the game open with four second period goals. Albert scored the first goal of the period at 1:31, assisted by Jacona and junior Gentry Zollars (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Wyman rounded out his hat trick with another power play strike, assisted by Albert and Jacona at 12:01. Ennis netted his first of the night, assisted by Kranzky and Van Siclen just 31 seconds later. Kranzky scored at 17:23 to put the Beacons up 6-1.

Stonehill opened the third period scoring with Gorovitz's third goal of the season, assisted by Manna, at 6:32. Ennis rounded out the scoring, assisted by Van Siclen and sophomore Andrew Burke (Southampton, Pa.), at 8:28.

Stonehill (2-6-1, 0-2-0 NE-10) will play in the consolation round of the PAL/Stovepipe Tournament tomorrow against host Southern New Hampshire University at 1:30 p.m. The Penmen fell to the Penn State club team, 5-2, in today's second game. The Skyhawks return home on Tuesday to host Worcester State College at 7 p.m. UMass Boston (3-1-0, 1-1-0 ECAC East) will play the Penn State club team for the PAL/Stovepipe Championship tomorrow at 4 p.m.
