Hawks clinch NE-10 regular season title behind five-goal second period outburst

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (February 25, 2010) - Saint Anselm College erased a two-goal deficit after a period of play by netting seven unanswered goals, including five in the second period alone, to skate away with a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale at the Foxborough Sports Center tonight.              

Stonehill (9-15-1, 2-9-0 NE-10) will be the No. 5 seed for the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament and will visit 4th-seeded Franklin Pierce University for a first round matchup on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Saint Anselm (13-11-1, 4-0-1 NE-10) wrapped up its sixth-straight NE-10 regular season title and a first round bye. The Hawks will host a semifinal round game against the lowest remaining seed after Saturday's first round on Wednesday night.

Junior Coleman Noonan (Norfolk, Mass./Catholic Memorial) led Saint Anselm with three points, collecting two goals and an assist on the night. Junior Jim Toomey (Billerica, Mass./Kimball Union) and freshman Mike Richard (Derry, N.H.) each posted a goal and assist for the Hawks, while freshman Ryan Clark (Wadsworth, Ohio) dished two assists. The Hawks also got goals from juniors John Penny (Shelton, Conn./Tilton School) and Nick Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Timothy King (Weymouth, Mass.).

Freshman Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) led Stonehill with a goal and assist, while junior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) added a pair of assists. Freshman Tyler Gordon (Franklin, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) also netted a goal for the Skyhawks.

Junior goaltender Alex Wyse (Amherst, N.Y.) preserved the win with 22 saves, half of which came in the opening period, for Saint Anselm. Sophomore Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) stopped 33 shots in net for Stonehill, including 17 in a scoreless first period. Saint Anselm finished with a 40-24 advantage in shots on goal and converted 3-of-5 power-play chances. Stonehill was just 1-for-11 with the man-advantage on the night.

Saint Anselm scored three goals in the opening 5:03 of the second period after Stonehill carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Wheeler netted his third of the season to spark the comeback with a power-play goal just 1:06 into the period. The Hawks knotted the score just over two minutes later with another power-play marker when Noonan and Clark set up Toomey for his sixth of the season at 3:13. Saint Anselm gained the lead less than two minutes after that when Noonan potted his first of two-straight unassisted goals at 5:03. He added his second with a shorthanded goal for his 19th tally of the year at 8:06 to extend the Hawks lead to two goals.

Saint Anselm struck once more before the second intermission as King scored his 11th of the year, assisted by freshman Tucker Mullin (Andover, Mass.), at 18:19. The Hawks broke the game open with two more in the third. The first came with Penny's third of the year at 4:24, before Richard rounded out the scoring with a power-play goal, assisted by Toomey, at 6:03 for his seventh of the season.

Stonehill looked in good position to clinch home ice advantage for Saturday's first round battle with Franklin Pierce, taking a two-goal lead into the first intermission. Borges started the scoring with his sixth of the season, assisted by Todesca and sophomore Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial), at 14:27. Borges and Todesca combined to set up the Skyhawks second of the period, scored by Gordon at 16:37. It marked Gordon's second marker of the year.
