Skyhawks snap four-game skid behind goal and assist from Borges and Doherty

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (February 3, 2010) - Stonehill College used three second period goals to fuel a 4-3 victory over Framingham State College in non-conference ice hockey action at Loring Arena tonight.

Sophomore Matthew Doherty (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) and freshman Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) each collected a goal and assist to lead Stonehill. Senior captain Peter Roundy (Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union) and sophomore Andrew Diozzi (Belmont, Mass./Deerfield) also netted goals for the Skyhawks, with Roundy extending his point streak to five games.

Junior goaltender Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) made 35 saves to preserve the win in goal for Stonehill, who edged Framingham State in shots, 39-38. Senior Andy Joyce (Milford, Mass./Marlboro) also stopped 35 shots for the Rams. The teams combined for five power-play goals with Stonehill finishing 2-for-5 with the man advantage and Framingham State going 3-for-6. Both teams scored two power-play goals in the second period.

Junior Blair Nickerson (Beverly, Mass.) played a role in all three Framingham goals with a goal and two assists. Senior Joseph Hurley (Charlestown, Mass.) added a goal and assist, while freshman Eric Walsh (Haverhill, Mass.) chipped in with a goal.


Junior Derek Chapdelaine stopped 35 shots to preserve the win.

Stonehill scored the lone first period goal when Doherty netted his third of the season, assisted by junior Michael Tuplin (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), at the 14:07 mark. The Skyhawks doubled their lead 4:34 into the second when Borges notched her third of the season, assisted by senior Zachary Cantin (Saugus, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and junior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial), on the power-play.

That kicked off a spree of four power-play goals for the teams, with three coming in a five-minute span. Walsh put Framingham State on the board at 6:46 with a power-play goal, assisted by Nickerson. Diozzi regained Stonehill's two-goal lead (3-1), assisted by Doherty and Borges, with his team-leading 11th of the season also with a man-advantage at 9:54. The Rams answered again with a power-play goal from Hurley, his tenth of the year, assisted by Nickerson at 12:38.

Roundy capped the second period scoring with his seven marker of the season, unassisted, at 15:19 which proved to be the game-winner. Framingham closed within a goal once again with Nickerson's first of the season, assisted by Hurley, on the power-play with 4:05 left in regulation, but the Rams would get no closer.

Stonehill (8-10-1, 1-4-0 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it returns to Northeast-10 play against Assumption College at the Foxborough Sports Center at 5 p.m. Framingham State (1-15-2, 1-10-1 MASCAC) hosts Westfield State College on Saturday at 4:40 p.m.
