Assumption Edges Stonehill, 5-4
Vona nets two goals, including game-winner, to lift Greyhounds to victory
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (February 6, 2010) - Assumption College held off a furious Stonehill College comeback effort from three goals down to claim a 5-4 victory in Northeast-10 Conference ice hockey action at the Foxborough Sports Center this evening.
Freshman Jaime Vona (West Seneca, N.Y.) scored two goals, including the game-winner on a delayed penalty with 4:21 remaining in the third period, to lead Assumption to the win. The Greyhounds stormed out to a 3-0 lead less than nine minutes into the contest, withstood a three-goal rally from Stonehill, and came away with the win.
Junior Pat Fitzgibbons (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, Mass.) each added a goal and assist for Assumption, while senior Jon Retelle (Monmouth, Maine) dished two assists. Sophomore Pat O'Kane (Hollis, N.H.) also netted a goal for the Greyhounds.
Senior captain Peter Roundy (Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union) scored a pair of goals for Stonehill, extending his point streak to six games. Junior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) dished three assists for the Skyhawks, while sophomore Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) and freshman Tyler Gordon (Franklin, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) each chipped in with a goal.

Sophomore Steve DiDomenico (Lowell, Mass.) posted 37 saves in goal for Assumption, including 22 in the second period as Stonehill recorded an incredible 36 shots (24 on goal) in the frame. Sophomore Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) stopped 18 shots over the final two periods. Junior Derek Chapdelaine (Granby, Mass./Springfield Cathedral) got the start and made four saves in the opening period.
Stonehill finished with a commanding 41-27 advantage in the contest, including a 24-7 margin the second period. The Skyhawks were 2-for-6 on the power-play, while Assumption was 1-for-7 and added a shorthanded goal.
Fitzgibbons opened the scoring just 1:30 into the game for Assumption, assisted by Retelle, with his fifth goal of the season. Larsen doubled the Greyhounds lead with an unassisted shorthanded goal at 6:39. Assumption extended its lead to three goals less than two minutes later when Vona bagged another unassisted goal at 8:36.
Stonehill started its comeback with a power-play goal by Roundy, assisted by sophomore Matthew Doherty (Milton, Mass./Thayer Academy) and Todesca, at 15:23. The Skyhawks evened the contest within the first seven minutes of the second, starting with Gordon's first collegiate goal, assisted by Todesca and senior Christopher Rogers (Westford, Mass./Pomfret School), at 3:02. Greene knotted the score with his sixth of the season, assisted by sophomore Andrew Diozzi (Belmont, Mass./Deerfield) and freshman Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy), on the power-play at 6:39.
O'Kane put Assumption back in front just before the second intermission with his NE-10 leading 23rd goal of the season, assisted by Larsen and sophomore Kevin Glanzman (Massapequa, N.Y.), at 17:42. Stonehill knotted the score once more with Roundy's ninth goal of the year, assisted by Todesca, at 9:32 of the third, before Vona's late game-winner on his sixth goal of the year.
Stonehill (8-11-1, 1-5-0 NE-10) is off until next Saturday when it opens a home-and-home NE-10 series with Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, N.H., at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks will then host the Penmen on Tuesday, February 16, at the Foxborough Sports Center at 7 p.m. Stonehill needs just a win in one of those two games to clinch the two Conference points for the season series. Assumption (11-9-1, 7-1-1 NE-10) hosts Worcester State College on Thursday at 7:35 p.m.
