Winning Streak Snapped, Skyhawks Fall 5-3
Boxscore
Bridgewater, Mass. - An early goal from senior
captain Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine) did not
hold up as the Wentworth Leopards (7-11, 5-3 Conference) snapped
Stonehill's winning steak Tuesday night, 5-3. The loss drops
the Skyhawks to 5-6-1 (2-1 Northeast-10) headed into Thursday
night's match up with Western New England College.
After scoring five goals in the first period Saturday verse
Worcester State College, the Skyhawks traded blows with the
Leopards throughout a scoreless first frame. With time
expiring, junior Bill Ninteau (Litchfield, N.H.)
blasted a blue line slap-shot in front of the net. The
rebound was slapped in by Curran for his team-leading eighth
marker. The early goal gave the Skyhawks a 1-0 advantage.
It did not take long for the Leopards to tie the score.
Just seconds into the next period freshman Geric Brodt scored on a
second-effort goal, slipping the puck between Mike
Manna's (Framingham, Mass.) legs. Minutes later
Brodt struck again, this time on a 2-on-1 break away with teammate
Dave Lewandowski.
Stonehill answered back quickly with a Paul
Reissfelder (Plymouth, Mass.) wrist shot from mid-ice
seconds later to make the score 2-2. The marker is
Reissfelder's fourth of the season.
Wentworth's offense continued to attack. A quick, one-timer
goal in front of net from Jeff Oddleifson gave the Leopards a one
goal advantage. Senior Matt Koehler matched Oddleifson's goal
with one of his own to put the visiting team up 4-2.
With under a minute remaining, Brian Davis
(Foxboro, Mass.) added his seventh marker of the season to bring
Stonehill within one. Davis' score was assisted by teammates
Pete Roundy (Simsbury, Conn.) and Ninteau.
An uncharacteristic six-goal frame made the score 4-3 in
Wentworth's favor.
A final goal from Wentworth's freshman Phil Cyr iced the win for
the Leopards. Goaltender Justin Marriott turned in a
masterful performance, stopping 46 shots on the way to his sixth
victory.
Despite allowing five goals, freshman Mike Manna turned in another
gutsy performance, making clutch stops on his way to a 35-save
night. The Skyhawks' offensive out-shot the Leopards 49-40 in
defeat.
Stonehill returns to the ice Thursday night when they travel to
Western New England College. The game is scheduled for 7:20
p.m.
