Senior Matt Curran scored Stonehill's lone goal in the 7-1 defeat. |
Bridgewater, Mass. - Four
first period goals, including two markers from sophomore Pat Welch,
proved to be too much as UMass-Dartmouth's offense exploded in a
7-1 victory over the Skyhawks. The loss drops the reigning
Northeast-10 Champions to 0-2-1 on the season.
Sophomore Matt Serino put the Corsairs on the board just minutes
into the first period. Welch increased UMass-Dartmouth's lead
with a goal minutes later, scoring one of his two first period
tallies to spot the visiting team a 2-0 advantage.
Senior Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine) answered
back, intercepting a pass in front of goaltender Jeff Green and
slipping it in to put Stonehill on the board. Curran's score
was assisted by Brendan O'Brien (Braintree,
Mass.).
The lone marker was all the offense the Skyhawks could muster as
they were out-shot by the Corsairs, 53-19.
A goal from senior Jeff Grant closed an impressive first period for
UMass-Dartmouth, 4-1. The Corsairs came out on fire,
out-shooting Stonehill 20-9 in the first and scoring four goals on
last week's Northeast-10 Goalie of Week and Freshman of the Week,
Justin Zegel (Ridgewood, N.J.). Zegel
finished with 46 saves in defeat.
UMass-Dartmouth would score twice in the second period to
increase their lead to five. Freshman Joseph Hill struck
first. His marker was assisted by Jason Stahl, his second of
the game. Hill's goal would be matched by another Grant score.
A final goal by senior defensemen Tyler Crocker would end a
humbling night for the Skyhawks. Junior goalie Jeff Green
finished his night midway through the third period after collecting
17 saves in his second victory of the season.
Stonehill will return to action Saturday night when they travel to
Nichols College. The game is scheduled for 8:30 PM.
