Skyhawks Picked First In Preseason Poll

Matt Curran returns after scoring 30 goals in 2006-07.

Easton, Mass. - The Stonehill men's ice hockey team was picked first in the Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, which was released on Wednesday by the conference office.  The Skyhawks, who captured their first ever Northeast-10 Conference Championship last season, received three first place votes to earn a share of the top spot with Saint Anselm.

Coming off a school-record tying 14 wins a season ago, new head coach Garry Hebert will lead a Skyhawk team headlined by junior Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.). O'Brien was named the 2006-2007 Northeast-10 Player of the Year after finishing the season with 45 points (12 goals, 33 assists), good for second in the conference.

Another key returner is senior Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine), who set a single season record with 30 goals a season ago. One of his best performances was a four goal outing in a 6-2 victory over Assumption in the Northeast-10 Conference semifinals. A member of the 2006-2007 New England Hockey Writers Northeast All-Star team, Curran also received first team All-Northeast-10 honors.

Stonehill's season begins Tuesday, November 6th, at Suffolk.  The Skyhawks' first home game will be Saturday, November 10th against Salve Regina at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.
