O'Brien Comes Up Big
Worchester, Mass. - A late power play goal from captain Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) led Stonehill College (3-5-1, 1-1 NE-10) to a 4-3 victory over Northeast-10 rival, the Assumption Greyhounds (5-7, 0-1 NE-10). After dropping their opening Conference game to SNHU last week, the reigning Northeast-10 Champion Skyhawks respond with an excellent effort to even their conference record.
Fresh off a two goal performance against SNHU, sophomore
John Sommers (Manchester, Conn.) netted his third
goal of the year midway through the first to give the Skyhawks a
1-0 lead. Brian Davis (Foxboro, Mass.) would
add a marker from Paul Reissfelder (Plymouth,
Mass.) and Chase Feole (Windham, N.H.) to give
Stonehill a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first.
Davis would add a second score with two minutes remaining in the
second to help Stonehill to a two goal advantage. Davis'
shorthanded goal came just minutes before Assumption's Patrick
Fitzgibbons netted his second goal of the night to cut the lead to
one.
In the final period Greyhound Chris Genovese scored a power play
goal to even the score at 3-3 with 10 minutes remaining in the
game. With three minutes left, Assumption's Marc Labb was
called for a Roughing penalty giving the Skyhawks a man
advantage. O'Brien would make it count - scoring with 2:17 on
the clock.
Freshman Mike Manna (Framingham, Mass.) recorded
the win to move his record to 1-1-0. Manna made 31 saves to
seal the Skyhawks' third win of the season and first conference
victory.
Stonehill goes back to work Monday night at 6:50 PM hosting
Franklin Pierce at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.
