BRIDGEWATER, Mass.-- Junior Brian Davis (Foxboro, Mass.) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner on a shorthanded tally 3:30 into the final period of action, to lift Stonehill to a 5-3 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Western New England Thursday evening at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.
The host Skyhawks (5-9, 4-7 ECAC Northeast) dug out of a 2-0 hole after 20 minutes of action by netting three goals in the first 10:05 in the middle stanza to grab a 3-2 advantage, as tallies by Davis, junior John Durkin (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomore Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) staked Stonehill to the lead. Junior Shawn Longley (Lewiston, Maine) evened matters at 3-3 for the visiting Golden Bears (7-10, 1-8 ECAC Northeast) with 2:27 remaining in the second period on a power play marker, but Davis gave the hosts the lead for good on an ensuing Western New England man advantage situation when he converted a feed from junior Chase Feole (Windham, N.H.) for the shorthanded game-winner. Feole iced matters for the Skyhawks with a goal that came with 3:10 remaining in the contest to account for the final score.
The Golden Bears grabbed their 2-0 first period lead by converting twice on their first four shots on net, as sophomore Joe Balog (Ludlow, Mass.) gave the visitors a 1-0 lead just 4:02 into the contest, and sophomore Mike Majesty (Chicago, Ill.) extended that margin to a pair with 7:07 remaining in the opening stanza, setting up the second period Stonehill flurry and finish.
O'Brien, Durkin and Feole each finished with a goal and an assist in the win for the Skyhawks, who also received a pair of assists off the stick of sophomore Paul Reissfelder (Plymouth, Mass.) as well as single helpers from senior Evan Spencer (Billerica, Mass.), junior Rob Carpenter (Cohasset, Mass.), sophomore Billy Ninteau (Litchfield, N.H.) and freshman Chris Rogers (Westford, Mass.). Junior Nick Sampson (Reading, Mass.) registered a pair of assists in the setback for Western New England, which received single assists from senior Mike Amato (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and sophomore Philip Lamy (Manchester, N.H.).
Senior Josh Green (Mendon, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for Stonehill with a 25-save effort, while junior Brandon Gervais (Lewiston, Maine) made 40 stops in net for Western New England as the Skyhawks outshot the Golden Bears by a 45-28 margin.
Stonehill travels to Boston on Saturday evening to take on Suffolk in an ECAC Northeast outing at Walter Brown Arena that faces off at 7:00 p.m., while Western New England heads to Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday evening to square off with Johnson & Wales in an ECAC Northeast match-up that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
