PORTSMOUTH, R.I.-- Senior Travis Hampton's (Billings, Mont.) goal with 1:11 remaining in the second period held up as the game-winner and lifted Salve Regina to a 3-2 non-league college ice hockey victory over Stonehill Saturday afternoon at the Portsmouth Abbey Rink.
Special teams played the biggest part in the contest, as four of the five goals scored on the day came on the power play. Sophomore Zach Sufilka (Lakewood, Ohio) staked the host Seahawks (1-1) to a 1-0 lead 12:26 into the opening stanza with a power play tally, but the visiting Skyhawks (1-1) evened matters with one second remaining in the first period when junior Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine) answered with a power play marker for a 1-1 draw after 20 minutes of action. Junior Jake Noonan (Arlington, Mass.) gave Salve Regina the lead for good at 2-1 with a power play goal 5:45 into the middle stanza before Hampton's goal staked the Seahawks to a 3-1 edge after 40 minutes, and Curran's second power play tally of the game with 5:42 remaining enabled Stonehill to close back to within one, but the Skyhawks could get no closer.
Senior Ryan Doyle (Lowell, Mass.), juniors Mike Kravchuk (Peabody, Mass.) and Mike Mallette (Chepachet, R.I.) and sophomore Conor McCahill (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) collected assists in the win for Salve Regina, while sophomore Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of helpers in the setback for Stonehill, which also received assists off the sticks of junior Rob Carpenter (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomore James Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.).
Sophomore Chase Goodrich (Salisbury, Vt.) picked up the win in goal for Salve Regina with a 20-save effort, while senior Matt Gorman (Southboro, Mass.) made 22 stops in net for Stonehill as the Seahawks outshot the Skyhawks by a 25-22 margin.
Stonehill hosts Plymouth State in an ECAC Northeast outing on Monday evening at the Bridgewater Ice Arena beginning at 7:10 p.m., while Salve Regina travels to Framingham, Mass. on Monday evening to take on Framingham State in an ECAC Northeast match-up at 7:20 p.m.
