BRIDGEWATER, Mass.-- Senior Brian Lewis (Cohasset, Mass.) netted his second career hat trick, while junior Josh Green (Mendon, Mass.) stopped 23 of 24 shots in goal as Stonehill set a school record with its seventh consecutive victory in posting a 5-1 ECAC Northeast ice hockey triumph over Suffolk Thursday evening at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.
Lewis, the reigning Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, notched a natural hat trick over the first 39-plus minutes of play for the host Skyhawks (10-6, 6-5 ECAC Northeast-10), who broke a 16-year old school record in garnering their seventh straight win dating back to December 10th, as his goal 8:10 into the contest on a feed from sophomore Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine) staked Stonehill to a 1-0 advantage after one. Lewis added two more tallies in the middle stanza, as his power play goal on feeds from sophomore Anthony Zanetti (Ludlow, Mass.) and junior Matt Pollara (Plymouth, Mass.), extended the hosts' edge to 2-0 3:05 into the period. Lewis completed his hat trick on assists from senior Ryan Watson (Brookline, Mass.) and freshman Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) to give Stonehill a 3-0 cushion after 40 minutes of play, and after freshman John Rocchio (East Greenwich, R.I.) put the visiting Rams (5-10-4, 4-5-1 ECAC Northeast) on the board 5:59 into the final period, tallies off the sticks of Curran and Zanetti in the final 2:34 of play sealed the Skyhawk triumph.
Curran and Zanetti each finished with a goal and an assist in the win for Stonehill, which also received three assists off the stick of Watson as well as a pair of helpers each from Pollara and O'Brien. Junior John Delaney (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J.) assisted on Rocchio's goal for Suffolk.
Green picked up his second win over Suffolk in five days and improved to 7-0 in goal on the season for Stonehill, while senior Greg Blais (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) made 34 stops in net for Suffolk as the Skyhawks outshot the Rams by a 39-24 margin.
Stonehill hosts Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference outing on Saturday afternoon at the Bridgewater Ice Arena beginning at 1:30 p.m., while Suffolk travels to Fitchburg, Mass. on Saturday evening to take on Fitchburg State in an ECAC Northeast match-up at the Wallace Civic Center that faces-off at 7:00 p.m.
