Pair of double-doubles lead Setters to win

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (January 29, 2019) – Pace University used a big run late in the first half to key a 79-68 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at the Goldstein Fitness Center tonight.

Junior Peyton Wejnert and sophomore Brandon Jacobs both notched double-doubles to lead Pace to its third win over its last four. Wejnert posted 19 points and ten rebounds, connecting on 8-of-14 shots, to go with four assists and two blocked shots, while Jacobs registered 18 points and 12 assists, with six boards, shooting 5-for-9 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point range. Junior Tyrone Cohen, Jr. contributed 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, with three boards and two steals, while sophomore Austin Gilbertson chipped in nine points, five boards, two assists and two steals.

Sophomore Owen Chose scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Stonehill, finishing 8-of-17 from the field, while junior Will Moreton posted his ninth double-double of the season (16th career) by scoring 11 of his 15 points in the first half, to go with 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals. He made 6-of-11 shots from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point distance, for the afternoon. Senior Michael Boen rounded out the Skyhawks in double-figures with 13 points, eight boards and a career-high matching six assists.

Stonehill held an eight-point lead (22-14) with 7:43 remaining in the first half after Moreton led a 10-2 run with eight-straight points. Pace outscored the Skyhawks 25-4 over the remainder of the half to take an 11-point lead (39-28) into halftime. The Setters finished shooting 53.8-percent (14-for-26) in the half, compared to 37.5% (9-24) for the Skyhawks. Pace opened the run with 14-straight points, the last five from Cohen, Jr. to grab the lead (28-22) with four minutes left. Gilbertson buried a three to extend the Setters lead to 14 (39-25), before Moreton capped the half with a three of his own as the hosts held their 11-point lead at the break.

Stonehill fought its way back within two (54-52) after back-to-back threes from Chose with 12:21 still to play. Pace wouldn't relinquish the lead, reclaiming a nine-point lead (64-55) after a Jacobs triple with 8:30 to go. Layups from senior Joel Berroa and Moreton pulled the Skyhawks back within five and then Boen made one of two at the line to get the visitors back within four (64-60) with less than seven minutes remaining, but Pace would keep the Skyhawks at arm's length the rest of the way before pulling away late.

Freshman Jordan Fox buried a three, and then Cohen, Jr. made a basket to push the Pace lead back to nine (69-60) with four minutes remaining. After two Boen free throws, the Setters reclaimed a double-figure lead (73-62) with two minutes to play, and then Cohen, Jr's three with 1:21 left sealed the win (76-64).

Stonehill (11-9, 5-8 NE10) returns to Merkert Gym on Saturday to host Adelphi University on Alumni Weekend at the College at 3:30 p.m. Pace (13-8, 7-6 NE10) visits nationally-ranked Bentley University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
