Moreton fills box score with 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists as Skyhawks win for eighth time over last 11 games

NYACK, N.Y. (January 6, 2018) – Stonehill College bounced back from its first loss since November to record its eighth win over its last 11 games with a 75-57 victory over Nyack College in non-conference men's basketball action at Bowman Gymnasium this afternoon.

Sophomore swingman Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) again led the way for Stonehill with 17 points, aided by 5-of-8 shooting from three-point distance, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals. Classmate Brandon Twitty (Randolph, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) aided in the balanced scoring effort for the Skyhawks, which shot 12-for-27 (44.4%) from the floor in each half, with 14 points, connecting on 4-of-6 three-pointers, four assists and two rebounds in 19-minutes. The duo spearheaded a 15-for-32 (46.9%) shooting effort from beyond the arc for the team overall.

Senior KJ Lee (Huntington Station, New York/Long Island Lutheran) added ten points, six boards, five assists and two steals for Stonehill. Sophomore Dan Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Peddie School) and freshman Owen Chose (Eden Prairie, Minnesota/Eden Prairie) each chipped in 11 points for the Skyhawks off the bench. Stonehill took good care of the basketball for the afternoon, committing just seven turnovers, only three after halftime.

Freshman Deandre Osuigwe (Sarasota, Florida/IMG Academy) was the lone Nyack player in double-figures, finishing with a game-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 4-for-9 from three-point distance, and seven rebounds. Sophomore Jah-Meer McDuffie (Syracuse, New York/East Syracuse Minoa) added nine points in ten minutes off the bench for the Warriors, with three rebounds, while senior Imran Ritchie (Uniondale, New York/Uniondale) contributed eight points and three assistss. Junior Calvin Willis (Brooklyn, New York/Brooklyn Collegiate) pulled down a team-high eight boards.

The teams battled back and forth for the opening five minutes of the contest, before Stonehill scored nine straight points, sparked by a Moreton three-pointer, to grab an eight point lead (20-12) after a jumper from senior Ryan Roach (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Cardinal Spellman) seven-minutes into the game. The Skyhawks extended the lead to ten points (24-14) after a jumper from senior Joel Berroa (Lawrence, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy) with 11:33 remaining in the opening half, but Nyack quickly pulled back within five (24-19) after a three-ball by junior Carl Balthazar (Montreal, Quebec/Laguardia CC) a minute and a half later.

Stonehill regained its ten-point margin (34-24) heading into the second half. Nyack was within nine (37-28) following a jumper by Osuigwe three-minutes into the second half, but the Skyhawks reeled off an 18-4 run over the next five minutes, drilling six-straight three-point attempts, led by three from Moreton, that opened a 23-point cushion (55-32) with 12:28 remaining, following back-to-back Moreton threes.

Stonehill's lead peaked at 25 (61-36) midway through the second half after consecutive three-pointers from Largey and Lee. Nyack wouldn't go down quietly, using an 18-4 run of its own to pull back within 11 (65-54) after a McDuffie jumper with 3:21 to play. The Warriors would get no closer; with Chose answering with a three-pointer and then the Skyhawks made all four free-throws in the final minute to seal the win, while the hosts went empty the rest of the way.

Stonehill (8-6, 4-4 NE10) returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits The College of Saint Rose, ranked ninth in the most recent D2SIDA East Region poll, for a Northeast-10 Conference clash at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks next home game is Wednesday, January 17, when they host Le Moyne College at Merkert Gym at 7:30 p.m. Nyack (2-11, 2-4 CACC) visits Jefferson University on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
