Men's Basketball Notches New Year’s Eve Win at LIU Post, 88-67

Moreton nets career-high 33 points to lead Skyhawks to fifth-straight win

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (December 31, 2017) – Stonehill College capped 2017 with its fifth-straight win to wrap up a two-game weekend sweep following an 88-67 triumph over LIU Post in non-conference men's basketball action at the Pratt Recreation Center this afternoon.

Sophomore swingman Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) led the way for Stonehill for the second-straight day, netting a career-high 33 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field, including 7-for-12 from three-point distance, while adding eight rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Senior KJ Lee (Huntington Station, New York/Long Island Lutheran) notched a double-double for the second-straight day (fourth career) with 13 points and a game-high ten rebounds, with seven assists and a steal.

Senior Ryan Roach (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Cardinal Spellman) rounded out Stonehill's double-figure scorers with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor, canning his lone three-point attempt, and converting 4-of-5 free-throws, with four assists and two steals. Sophomore Brandon Twitty (Randolph, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) chipped in nine points and two steals.

Freshman Darien Jenkins (Deer Park, New York/Deer Park) paced LIU Post with 26 points off the bench on 10-of-19 shooting overall, including 4-for-9 from three-point distance, with four rebounds in 29 minutes. Senior Aary Bibens (Bennington, Vermont/Mount Anthony Union) added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers, while sophomore Kyle Doucette (Lynn, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton) registered ten points and a team-best eight rebounds. Freshman Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor (Woodside, New York/Monsignor McClancy) chipped in ten points and six boards (five offensive) off the bench.

LIU Post jumped out to an early lead (8-4), but Stonehill reeled off a 27-0 run to take control with a 23-point cushion (31-8) after freshman Owen Chose (Eden Prairie, Minnesota/Eden Prairie) capped a string of five-straight Skyhawk three-pointers with 11-minutes remaining in the opening half. Moreton canned three-straight three-pointers of his own during the stretch in which he scored 11 of his 16 first half points.

LIU Post was able to pull back within ten (31-21) with a 13-0 run, capped by an Ortiz-Traylor tip-in five-minutes later. The Pioneers were able to draw back within seven (39-32) after a Jenkins triple with three-minutes to play in the half, before Stonehill carried a nine-point lead (41-32) into halftime.

LIU Post closed its deficit to five (51-46) after a Jenkins layup seven minutes into the second half, but Stonehill pulled away again, stretching its lead to 13 (63-50) after a Lee free-throw with nine minutes to play. The Skyhawks reclaimed their 23-point lead (77-54) with a 12-0 run, capped by a Moreton dunk with 4:19 on the clock that sealed the win.

Stonehill (7-5, 4-3 NE10) returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday, when it hosts American International College inside Merkert Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available for sale online at stonehillskyhawks.com. LIU Post (4-9, 2-1 ECC) visits Molloy College on Wednesday.
