Five Skyhawk starters reach double-figures, led by Logan's 20 points
EASTON, Mass. (January 28, 2017) – Stonehill College emerged from a week off as a new team and fired its way to a 97-71 victory over The College of Saint Rose, receiving votes in both Division II national polls and ranked No. 2 in the D2SIDA East Regional poll, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action on Paula Sullivan Court at Merkert Gymnasium today.
Senior Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) paced five Stonehill starters in double-figures with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including 2-for-3 from three-point distance, four rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. His ninth 20-point outing of the season (27th career) moves Logan into sixth place on Stonehill's career scoring list with 1,621 points in 108 career games, moving past George Peterson '67 (1,604) this afternoon and within 58 points of the top five. His 128 career three-point field goals are just three shy of cracking the program's all-time top ten list.
Junior KJ Lee (Huntington Station, New York/Long Island Lutheran) added 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, connecting on his lone three-pointer and all five free-throw attempts, to go with six rebounds, five assists, with no turnovers, and a steal. Freshman Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) totaled 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-for-5 from deep, two boards, two assists and a season-high five steals, while classmate Daniel Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Peddie School) made all three of his shots from the floor, including a three-pointer, and 4-of-5 free-throws for 11 points and a season-best five assists. Junior Isaiah Bess (LaGrange, Maine/Hampden Academy) rounded out the Skyhawks double-figure scorers with ten points.
Senior Chris Dorgler (Floral Park, New York/Archbishop Molloy) paced Saint Rose with 17 points, aided by a perfect 10-for-10 at the free-throw line, with seven rebounds (five offensive) and two assists. Junior Julian Lipinski (Melbourne, Australia) added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, three rebounds and three blocked shots, while classmate Jack Jones (Sydney, Australia) rounded out the Golden Knights in double figures with 12 points and five boards.

Stonehill finished shooting 60-percent from the field (36-for-60), including 62.1% (18-29) in the second half, draining 12-of-21 three-pointers (57.1%) and converting 13-17 (76.5%) free-throws. The Skyhawks buried 8-of-13 three-pointers (61.5%) in the opening half to fuel a 48-34 halftime lead. Stonehill posted a 24-15 advantage in points off turnovers, while Saint Rose held a 34-31 rebounding edge. The Golden Knights were held to 40% shooting (26-65), including 38.9% (14-36) in the second half as the hosts broke the game open, connecting on just 5-of-24 (20.8%) threes to go with 14-of-17 free-throw shooting (82.4%).
Employing a full court press for the first time in recent memory, Stonehill quickly erased an early four point deficit with a 15-2 run to open its first double-figure lead (24-10) after a Logan layup six minutes into the game. The Skyhawks forced six of Saint Rose's 18 turnovers during the contest in that stretch alone, with Moreton scoring eight points.
Saint Rose drew back within a point (28-27) following a free-throw by Lipinski with seven minutes remaining in the half, but Stonehill followed with back to back Moreton triples to restore a seven point cushion (34-27) and used a 14-2 run to take a 17 point lead (48-31) with a minute remaining after back to back threes from sophomore Michael Boen (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) and Lee, before Dorgler capped the first half scoring with a three as the hosts settled for a 14 point (48-34) halftime advantage.
Saint Rose drew within ten (52-42) with a layup from senior Damon Coleman (Roosevelt, New York/Holy Trinity) two and a half minutes into the second half, but that would be the closest it would get the rest of the day. Stonehill followed with a 20-4 run to open a 26-point bulge (72-46) after a layup from junior Joel Berroa (Lawrence, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy) with 11:33 on the clock. Lee scored six points as well during that stretch and the Skyhawks lead wouldn't dip inside 20 the rest of the way, peaking at 29 (94-65) after a Logan three with three minutes to play.
Stonehill (11-9, 6-8 NE10) is back in action on Wednesday when it visits rival Bentley University for a key NE10 battle at 7:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday to host Franklin Pierce University as part of Alumni Weekend at the College at 3:30 p.m. Saint Rose (18-5, 10-4 NE10) visits regionally-ranked Le Moyne College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
