Largey drains eight three-pointers for season-high 31 points for Skyhawks

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 12, 2016) – Stonehill College, among teams receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II preseason poll, placed three freshmen in double-figures in rolling to a 98-68 victory over Queens (N.Y.) College on day two of the 2016 Assumption College Tip-Off Classic at Andrew Laska Gymnasium tonight.

Freshman Daniel Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Shore Regional) poured in a season-high 31 points, including 18 in the first half, as he connected on 8-of-10 three-pointers as part of 10-for-14 shooting from the field overall, while converting 3-of-4 free-throws to go with a season and team-best eight rebounds, three assists and three steals off the bench. He was 6-for-9 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from long range, in netting his 18 first half points to lead the Skyhawks back from an 11 point deficit to lead by ten at the break (40-30).

Largey was among three freshmen in double figures to lead Stonehill on the night. Classmate Brandon Twitty (Randolph, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) added a season-high 17 points in 14 minutes off the bench, connecting on 6-of-7 shots, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, while Will Moreton (Minneapolis, Minnesota/Edina) was the lone Skyhawks starter in double figures with a season-best 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting, including 1-for-2 from three, canning 5-of-6 free-throws with six rebounds and three steals.

Stonehill shot 53.3-percent from the field, including 17-for-26 (65.4%) in the second half to break the game open, connecting on 14-of-28 (50%) three-pointers, including 7-for-11 (63.6%) in the final 20 minutes, and going 20-for-28 (71.4%) from the free-throw line. The Skyhawks also held a 41-35 rebounding edge, outscored Queens 28-12 in points off turnovers, and saw the bench score 64 of their 98 points.

Junior Simon Green (Harlem, New York/Thurgood Marshall) led four Queens players in double-figures with 19 points on 6-of-19 shooting, including 6-for-12 from three-point distance, with three rebounds and two assists. Senior Tyree White (Brooklyn, New York/Science Skills Center) posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds (six offensive), while classmates Malcolm Moore (Corona, New York/Flushing) and Diego Maldonado (Valley Stream, New York/Valley Stream South) each netted ten points for the Knights.

Queens was limited to 33.9-percent shooting (21-for-62), including 15-for-37 (40.5%) from three-point distance, while converting 11-of-18 (61.1%) free-throws.

Stonehill trailed by 11 (20-9) eight minutes into the game after back to back three-pointers by Green and Maldonado. Largey started to heat up with a three-pointer to answer at the other end, but senior Kyheim Chaplin (Freeport, New York/Freeport) delivered another triple for the Knights to restore the 11-point cushion (23-12) with 11:32 remaining. Maldonado answered a three by sophomore Michael Boen (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) with another triple and Queens remained in front by 11 (26-15) with 9:17 to go in the half.

A combined eight of nine baskets made by the two teams over a six minute span made for an exciting stretch, with Stonehill following up Maldonado's second three of the run with 11 straight points to pull even (26-26) after a KJ Lee (Huntington Station, New York/Long Island Lutheran) jumper with five minutes remaining in the half. Largey sparked the run with back to back triples, while junior Isaiah Bess (LaGrange, Maine/Hampden Academy) converted a conventional three-point play during that stretch.

Stonehill finished the half with 12-straight points to carry a ten point lead (40-30) into halftime, outscoring Queens 25-4 in the last 9:17 of the frame. Largey scored ten of the Skyhawks 12 points during the closing stretch, including three straight three-pointers, while Lee contributed a layup.

Stonehill's lead was 11 (46-35) after a basket from White three minutes into the second half, but the Skyhawks used a 14-1 run to break the game open with a 24 point lead (60-36) after a Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) jumper with 13:17 to play. Queens wouldn't get back within 20 points the rest of the way, with the Skyhawks lead reaching 30 (69-39) after two Largey free-throws midway through the half, before peaking at 38 (89-51) following two Lee free-throws with six minutes to go.

Stonehill (2-0, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it opens its Northeast-10 Conference and home schedule by hosting Assumption in Merkert Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. Queens (1-1, 0-0 ECC) hosts Roberts Wesleyan University for its East Coast Conference opener on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
