Logan leads three Skyhawks in double-figures with 20 points

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (November 3, 2016) – Stonehill College, among teams receiving votes in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II preseason poll, gave NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member Boston College all the challenge it wanted before falling late, 81-74, in a men's basketball preseason exhibition matchup at Silvio O. Conte Forum tonight.

Senior All-Region forward Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) led three Stonehill players in double-figures with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field, including 2-for-5 from three-point range, to go with a team-high six rebounds and an assist. Classmate Jim Walsh (Manasquan, New Jersey/Manasquan) returned after missing the majority of his junior season to injury with 14 points on 3-of-6 shooting, converting 7-of-9 free-throws, to go with a pair of rebounds. Junior KJ Lee (Huntington Station, New York/Long Island Lutheran), a transfer from Marist College, added 11 points, two boards and two assists, while junior Ryan Roach (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Cardinal Spellman) and freshman Daniel Largey (Oceanport, New Jersey/Shore Regional) each chipped in nine points. Roach also dished out three assists and had two steals, while Largey canned 3-of-5 three-pointers and grabbed five rebounds.

Boston College boasted a pair of 20-point scorers, led by sophomore Jerome Robinson (Raleigh, North Carolina/Needham Broughton) with a game-high 27 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the floor, while converting 7-of-8 free-throws, to go with seven rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. Postgrad Mo Jeffers (Washington, D.C./Calvin Coolidge), a transfer from Delaware, added 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting and seven boards. Sophomore A.J. Turner (Mount Clemens, Michigan/New Hampton School) dished out a game-high seven assists for the Eagles.

BC shot 54.1-percent from the field (33-for-61) and converted 12-of-17 (70.6%) free-throws for the night, while posting a 44-31 rebounding advantage. Stonehill was limited to 36.7% (22-60) shooting, but buried nine three-pointers (9-for-32/28.1%) and converted 21-of-34 (61.8%) free-throws. The Skyhawks turned the ball over just nine times, compared to 16 for the hosts.

Neither team led by more than a possession over the first 15 minutes of a back and forth opening half until Logan put Stonehill in front with a jumper and then Roach dropped a three-pointer for a four point Skyhawks lead (32-28) with 5:07 left before the half. BC scored the next six points to claim the lead (34-32) after a Jeffers dunk with 2:25 left. Walsh answered with a layup at the other end for the Skyhawks, but the Eagles followed with layups from Jeffers and Robinson to take their own four point lead (38-34) with 57-seconds to go before halftime.

Boston College took a three point lead (40-37) into the intermission, but Logan kept Stonehill within a point with its first two baskets of the second half. The Eagles responded with an 8-0 run to open the largest lead of the night for either team (50-41) following a three-pointer from sophomore Jordan Chatman (Vancouver, Washington/Union) five and a half minutes into the half.

Stonehill held BC right there, but the Eagles maintained an eight point lead (57-49) after a Jeffers jumper with 12-minutes remaining. Stonehill cut its deficit to four (57-53) with a Logan layup midway through the half. The Skyhawks were still trailing by that margin (63-59) with seven minutes to go when Walsh scored a layup and then Roach drained a pair of free-throws to force the tenth tie of the game (63-63) with 5:48 still to play.

BC wouldn't relinquish the lead and restored a six point advantage (72-66) with a Robinson layup with three minutes remaining. Back to back baskets from Lee drew Stonehill back within three (72-69) a minute later. Robinson made two free-throws and a layup to push the Eagles lead back to seven (76-69) with a minute to go, but Walsh was fouled shooting a three-pointer and drained all three from the stripe to pull the Skyhawks back within four with 53-seconds on the clock. Robinson was fouled, but made just one of two at the line, however, Stonehill would get no closer as a three ball at the other end was off the mark and then freshman Ky Bowman (Havelock, North Carolina/Havelock) canned a pair of free-throws and added the final basket for the Eagles to result in the final seven point margin.

Stonehill, the reigning NCAA Division II East Region Champions, opens its 2016-17 season next Friday, November 11, when it faces Nyack College at the Assumption College Tip-Off Classic in Worcester, Massachusetts, at 5:30 p.m. The Skyhawks home and Northeast-10 Conference opener is the following Wednesday, November 16, against Assumption at 7:30 p.m. Boston College opens its season next Friday when it hosts Nicholls State University at 7 p.m.
