Logan posts second straight double-double as Skyhawks win third straight
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (January 20, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's D2SIDA East Regional poll, broke the game open in the second half to claim a 77-60 victory over Adelphi University, ranked seventh in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at the Center for Recreation and Sport tonight.
Junior Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) posted his second straight double-double and eighth of the year (18th career) with a game-high 25 points (14 second half) and 17 rebounds with two assists as he made 9-of-17 shots from the field and converted 6-of-9 free-throws for the night. Senior Pierce Cumpstone (Bainbridge Township, Ohio/Kenston) nearly joined Logan with a double-double, scoring 18 of his 20 points in the second half to go with nine rebounds as he made 7-of-10 shots from the floor and 6-of-7 free-throws.
Senior Daniel Brix (Monroe Township, New Jersey/Saint Joseph) added 14 points, aided by 8-of-8 shooting at the free-throw line, with three rebounds and three assists, while classmate Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) chipped in seven points, six assists and three rebounds.
Sophomore Michael Coffey (Monroe, New York/John S. Burke) and freshman Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, New York/Brentwood) paced a balanced effort for Adelphi with 14 points each. Coffey made 5-of-14 shots from the field and added a team-high seven rebounds with two assists, while Ginyard converted all six free-throw attempts while shooting 4-for-11 from the floor off the bench with three boards. Sophomore Manny Suarez (Cliffside Park, New Jersey/Marist) added 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting with five rebounds, while senior Anthony Libroia (Bayside, New York/Holy Cross) chipped in ten points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Stonehill connected at 49-percent from the field (25-for-51) for the night, including 51.9% (14-27) in the second half to break open a one point halftime edge (31-30). The Skyhawks made just 4-of-22 three-pointers (18.2%), but were 23-for-29 (79.3%) from the free-throw line and posted a 40-29 rebounding advantage. Both teams turned the ball over only 12 times, but Stonehill held an 18-11 edge in points off. Adelphi was limited to 36.2% (21-58) shooting from the floor, including 3-for-14 (12.5%) from beyond the arc.
Stonehill trailed by seven twice in the first half, the latter occasion (22-15) after a layup from Suarez with 7:38 remaining in the stanza. Logan converted a three-point play and Smith added a jumper to pull the Skyhawks within two (22-20) a minute later. The teams traded baskets until Stonehill scored seven of the last nine points of the half to take the lead into the intermission (31-30) after a layup from senior Adam Bramanti (Middleton, Massachusetts/Masconomet Regional).
Stonehill took control in the second half from the outset, scoring the first seven points of the frame to open an eight point lead (38-30) after a Bramanti triple 1:36 in. Adelphi initially answered with a layup from Libroia and three-pointer by Suarez to cut the gap to three (38-35) a minute later, but the Skyhawks surge continued with nine straight points that extended the run to 16-5 to open a 12 point lead (47-35) after a Logan three with 14-minutes to go.
Smith pushed the lead to 13 (52-39) on a three-pointer midway through the half and then Adelphi crept back within eight (54-46) after a Libroia layup with 7:26 to play. Stonehill held firm and stretched its lead to a 14 (63-49) following a Cumpstone layup with 5:38 to go. The Skyhawks lead wouldn't dip below double figures again and they extended the lead to a game-high 19 (77-58) in the final minute when Cumpstone converted a three-point play.
Stonehill (14-4, 9-3 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it hosts American International College, the defending NE-10 tournament champions, for a league matchup for the Skyhawks Purple & White Game as part of Alumni Weekend at the College at 3:30 p.m. Adelphi (15-4, 7-4 NE-10) visits Merrimack College on Saturday at 3 p.m.
