Logan leads Skyhawks to third straight win with 22 points 

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (January 24, 2015) – Stonehill College withstood every second half run the University of New Haven could muster, using a strong defensive effort for a key 63-53 road win for its third straight victory and seventh over the last nine games in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at Charger Gymnasium this afternoon.

Sophomore Ryan Logan (Fredericktown, Ohio/Fredericktown) posted his fourth 20-plus point outing of the season (three of which have been in the last five games) with a game-high 22 points (14 first half) on 6-of-14 shooting, including 4-for-6 from three-point range, while converting 6-of-7 free-throws to go with seven rebounds. Classmate Jimmy Walsh (Manasquan, New Jersey/Manasquan) added a career-high 16 points, connecting on 4-of-5 three-pointers and 4-of-6 free-throws, with three rebounds and a blocked shot, while junior Carter Smith (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) scored ten of his 12 points in the second half, aided by 6-for-6 shooting at the line, with five assists. Senior Jack Cole (New Providence, New Jersey/New Providence) pulled down a ten-high ten boards to go with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and a blocked shot.

Sophomore Jemal Mosley (Spring Valley, New York/Don Bosco Prep) led New Haven with 19 points on 7-of-22 shooting, including 5-for-12 from beyond the arc, and two assists. Senior Jonny Ocasio (Queens, New York/Charlotte (Fla.)) added ten points off the bench as he converted 8-of-9 free-throws to go with four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Seniors Eric Anderson (Newark, New Jersey/Newark Tech) and Cyrus James (Manchester, Connecticut/Howell Chaney Tech) both pulled down double-figure rebound totals as the Chargers had a 44-33 rebounding advantage. Anderson grabbed a game-high 15 boards (seven offensive) to go with nine points, four assists and two blocked shots, while Jones added ten rebounds, eight points and two blocks.

Stonehill shot 40.9-percent (18-for-44) from the field, including 45.5% (10-22) in the first half, connecting on 8-of-18 three-pointers (44.4%) and converted 19-of-25 (76%) free-throws for the afternoon. New Haven was limited to 31-percent (18-for-58) shooting, including 8-for-34 (23.5%) in the second half, connecting on 6-of-22 (27.3%) three-pointers and 11-of-19 (57.9%) free-throws for the day.

Stonehill led by as much as nine in the first half before taking a six point cushion (31-25) into halftime and then withstood a series of New Haven pushes that pulled the hosts within a possession six times over the closing 20 minutes, including a 51-51 deadlock after two free-throws by Ocasio with 4:50 remaining. The Skyhawks held the Chargers without a field goal over the final 6:11 to clinch the victory as the visitors would end up winning going away.

After New Haven forced the late tie, Cole put Stonehill back in front with a jumper at the other end. The Chargers missed two free-throws and then Walsh drilled a three-pointer for a five point lead (56-51) for Stonehill. The Skyhawks converted 5-of-6 free-throws from there and Smith gave the visitors their largest lead of the game (63-51) with a jumper with 15-seconds to go.

Stonehill used a 13-2 run to open a nine point lead (28-19) after the game featured nine ties and five lead changes over the opening 15 minutes, capped by a Walsh triple with 2:25 to play in the half. New Haven pulled back within three (28-25) on a Mosley layup with 54-seconds remaining before Logan sent the Skyhawks into the locker room with a six point lead (31-25).

Cole put Stonehill up eight (33-25) with a put back on the opening possession of the second half. New Haven drew within two (36-34) on a three-pointer by freshman Tommy Hunt (Smithfield, Rhode Island/St. Andrew's) three minutes into the second half and then Mosley buried a three to draw the hosts within one (38-37) with 16 minutes to go after two Smith free-throws.

Anderson converted a three-point play to pull New Haven within a point again (41-40) with 15:17 on the clock, but Stonehill worked the lead to six (46-40) after a Walsh three with 13 minutes to go. The Chargers quickly cut the deficit back to two (51-49) with a Mosley three with 6:11 remaining, but the Skyhawks worked their lead back to seven (51-44) after two Logan free-throws with seven minutes to go. New Haven was able to work one last tie (51-51) as Mosley hit another three and then Ocasio converted two free-throws before Stonehill was finally able to put the game away.

Stonehill (12-6, 7-5 NE-10) is right back in action on Tuesday night when it visits Le Moyne College, ranked fifth in the D2SIDA East Regional poll, for a Northeast-10 matchup at 7 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, January 31, to host The College of Saint Rose as part of Alumni Weekend at the College at 3:30 p.m. New Haven (11-7, 6-6 NE-10) hosts Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
